As I face my first long summer road trip I remain concerned about 12V failure. 2023 R1S only one battery.

I have tools etc. to get into the frunk if the 12V fails.

If I stored a backup 12V in the frunk (OHMMU) and connected it in parallel with the existing failed 12V would that likely revive the vehicle or would it just try to charge the existing dead battery?

Would a swap be preferable ?

Yes, I do check the 12V in the ride menu-- so far no issues.
Yes, I know that if the HV battery is the problem this is not the solution, just talking 12V here.
Yes, I know I could get into the vehicle using the trailer hitch leads with a portable jumpstart but that would not solve a dead 12V.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

It depends on how the battery failed. If it failed due to one or more shorted cells, it will pull the spare battery down. If the battery failed due to an open cell, it should be ok.

I think you are over thinking It. A spare battery and tools should be a sufficient backup plan. While 12v failure is somewhat common it’s still highly unlikely to occur on your trip. I would think your parallel battery plan would actually be more likely to cause problems than prevent a problem. Especially considering one battery would be lead acid and the other would be lithium running in parallel.

Thank you.. might not be able to determine that on the fly.

I wish there were a non-venting drop in for a backup to carry that not $350 . Any suggestions ?

The battery is a standard Powersports and garden battery. Find a similar sized LiFePO4 which should be $100 or so.

Has anyone used any of these aftermarket replacements? Do they in fact fit?

On my Teslas I had before, I could just simply roll into an Auto Zone and pick up a battery when needed. I have been trying to find a suitable replacement that can be purchased at an auto parts store so I can get back on the road if needed instead of ordering one online and waiting. Not a viable option if on a road trip.

Any help would be appreciated.

Bringing a spare 12V battery on your trip is a good idea. My 12V battery dropped from 12V to 6V overnight and will not accept charge. I was lucky that it happened with the R1S parked in the garage. Rivian replaced it the same day. The original battery supplier was C&D technologies. I have not checked if they do direct sales to consumers but you may be able to purchase a spare 12V from C&D to take with you for peace of mind.

That Is my concern as well. If the posts don't line up it won't be the quick swap that I might need. I don't want take apart my currently working system to check.

Yes I would like to find this OEM battery-- but so far no luck-- I do not belive Rivian would just sell me one, but I may visit my local service center and inquire. Ohmmu would likely be a drop in replacement but they are super expensive for something I hope not to use or need. I have seen a few vendors of c/d technologies batteries, but not this one : DCS-18UNC RIT. If anyone know a seller please let me know. In the ride menu which I check periodically my voltage for 12V reads slightly above 13. I will be keeping an eye on it. THX

I have tried that route. They say they no longer make that battery and also don’t have a replacement.
