I'm not sure they can legally sell it if the VIN was indicating a specific model. They could say the SW unlock comes with it the car, but I haven't seen official guidance on how this will work. It definitely doesn't make sense for leases that won't be bought out.
That's the thing... In Gen1, the VIN just gives you hardware installed. Everything is dual motor, large pack that isn't a dual motor max pack. Unless it's a quad.
There is a VIN decoder on this site you can reference.

Very tempting. If it was 3.5K or less, I’d pull the trigger. Who's pulled the trigger?

As a PDM owner (lease) who does not do a lot of offroad and likes smooth rides, I’d skip it if I didn’t already have it, especially for a lease. The extra power only exists in Sport mode, unless Rivian has changed something they aren’t telling us. Sport mode also introduces a rough, sometimes jarring ride. And it is not easy to switch into it easily for passing (like my Audi eTron can). It also lowers ride height which I understand accelerates tire wear. So unless you like all those things, it is not worth it IMO. I find I never go into Sport mode so the Performance add-on is useless.

Just got the email from Rivian telling me I'm eligible to upgrade. In addition to the increase in HP, it touts the added drive modes as part of the upgrade. However, with the AT package, I've had soft sand mode from day one, and rally mode since the latest update. Are these modes "worth" anything? If so, shouldn't those with AT get a break on the upgrade price, and if not, why doesn't everyone get the added modes for free?

I want to correct what I posted above. just got the email today too! I don’t know why I got it since my R1T is already performance dual upgraded at the factory. But I noticed something interesting I’ve not seen before. Rivian states “Our Performance Upgrade energizes your daily driving in All-Purpose mode, boosting your 0-60 mph speed from 4.5 seconds to 4.1 seconds.” I don’t know if this was just added or always existed, but this means you do get a “performance lite” upgrade in All Purpose. Full performance still requires Sport mode. Unfortunately I can’t say how much of a difference this makes as I’ve never driven a non-performance dual.

On one hand, good point. On the other hand, shhh! (in case its a mistake)

I also have a regular DM with AT package so I already had soft sand. After the SW upgrade, I was surprised to see Rally there. Unless I misread the press release, I'm not sure the collective "we" were aware this came along in the regular SW update. $5k for only Sport is definitely not happening on my end.
