Georgia plans to announce next week it has landed a factory from well-financed electric vehicle startup Rivian, a deal that officials hope will make the state a leader in the next generation of the automotive industry, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has learned.

Gov. Brian Kemp and Rivian officials are expected to hold a ceremony next Thursday to outline the project, according to two senior officials with direct knowledge of the negotiations.

Rivian has been in talks to develop a site along I-20 straddling Walton and Morgan counties about an hour’s drive east of Atlanta, between the cities of Social Circle and Rutledge, according to people familiar with the matter.

Very exciting news, indeed! Now… let’s hope this also helps us open up the dealership laws to not just have a Tesla-specific exception!

edit to add:
A possibly new piece of information from this article about battery suppliers:

The East Atlanta Megasite and other industrial properties in the area also have important rail connections, including a link to Commerce, where South Korea’s SK Battery America is building a $2.6 billion battery plant. Rivian plans to purchase EV batteries from SK.
SK Innovations would be a new supplier. This might simply have been a reporter conflating SKI and Samsung SDI, or it could be that Rivian plans to have at least 2 battery suppliers. I also anticipate them co-operating a battery cell plant on their mega site, but that will be years down the road.

The article says 200000 vehicle factory and maybe 8000 people. That is a low production figure, most factories build 300000 plus and the employment figure seems high. Again most factories I have heard of are around the 3-4K figure. This seems small and relatively inefficient compared to other manufacturers.

If they end up doing in house batteries at that location it could account for the employee : output ratio.

When you go the hand made route it take a few more hands:)
Do you think a single person can assemble three R1s per month? May be another over promise, under deliver!

I assume that top end employment number is inclusive of battery production and possibly manufacturing of component parts, including hopefully things like motors. What’s the employment number for a battery plant sufficiently large to supply 200k vehicles/year? That’s more than 1.21 gigawatts!

Most "car factories" don't manufacture much but are rather final assembly points.

IF Rivian follows the Tesla route and vertically integrates there will be many more employees per car produced.

Outsourcing doesn't create value.

Ok that makes sense. Although it is true the factory is small in terms of units with Fremont at over 400k and most other factories in the west 300k region (except Lucid)

Announcement coming Thursday, just in time for the earnings call. Good week for Rivian. I honestly thought it would take another quarter before they could announce the new factory.
