I do have a service appointment to investigate this loud noise coming from the front of my R1T. I was in my place of employment on a hot day here in Michigan and opened my RIVIAN APP checking on the cabin temp of my vehicle. The temp was diagnosed as being 103° cabin temp so I set the truck to the cooling setting so I was comfortable when I got in to go home. This video was taken after I got out of work walking up to the truck somewhat embarrassed at its volume and not being able to explain it away to coworkers… It has repeated itself so it’s either unfortunately designed that way

or something is wrong … wanted to reach out to see if others may have had this happen and the outcome of your service appt!

It's the variable speed electric motor AC compressor doing its job. That sounds like what many others are experiencing. In my opinion it's "normal operation" and not a material defect/malfunction. Your mileage may vary as to whether this level of noise is acceptable, is a design flaw, is louder or quieter than a Tesla or ICE, justifies storming Normal with pitchforks, etc.

Normal is subjective. My R1S operated without this aggressive weedwacker AC compressor ramp for months. No noise. That was normal to me, meaning no noise and can’t hear it at the start of a drive cycle.

Starting with release 2023.22.0 the AC compressor ramps to full tilt and is very loud at the start of each drive cycle regardless of cabin temperature.

if you turn on recycle it doesn’t do this. If I can control the behavior with a button, it’s 100% a software problem perhaps onset by pre-existing hardware concerns that aren’t being taken into account by the software, where previously (to 2023.22.0) it didn’t exhibit this behavior.

Definitely a software issue. I noted it in another thread. If your AC gets stuck on what I call "turbo", turn off the AC, wait 30 seconds and turn it back on. It should go back to normal behavior.

I was at a Tesla service center this past weekend doing a demo drive of a Model X and this sounds just like all the Teslas that were out there waiting for demo drives and using the keep cool feature. This was at 3pm in the afternoon and it was 114 degrees outside, so it will definitely take some effort to keep the interior at a comfortable temperature.

I don’t have an R1 yet, so can’t compare the video to anything I own (outside of the fact that this seems as loud as my BMW M3 fans trying to keep things cool after a hard driving session) but just wanted to give another perspective.

In my opinions, sound is not the issue, the vibration is.
I noticed similar noises from Rav4 prime, tesla Y, Polestar2. but i only feel petal vibration in R1S.

Yeap. Noticed it with the latest update. Only way is to turn off AC then back on.

Yeah this is strange because it has always been this way for me. I have an 8/2022 delivery.

AC works really badly on any car that isn't moving to force air through the condenser. The fans have to work hard. When the vehicle is moving, no fans are needed and the AC works more efficiently. Much of the noise an ICE car makes isn't the engine.

I got mine in March. Only noticed it since the last update. If I don't turn the ac to low or off when I get out of the car. I noticed when I get back to the car, ac will automatically turn on really high noise. Only way is to press off button then on again. Kinda annoying

As you said…100+ degrees

my understanding was that it was updated to have the AC run this way-

Yes. definitely noticed it too. It started out extremely loud, unless you turn it off and wait a few seconds, then turn it back on then it will go back to normal.

I agree. turning it off for couple of seconds and turning it back on eliminates the sound.
