Well folks, Operation R1T Stump Pull 1.0 was such a success, I decided to go for round 2 on an adjacent stump (clearing an area for a much needed shed). Same setup as last time, except 2 minor differences:

1. Used a moving blanket on the chain as suggested by others (I don't think it was necessary)
2. Presoaked the soil around the base of the tree for about 8 hours (no digging or cutting of roots)

My trusty Superintendent showed up after to inspect my work. He seemed to approve of the hole left behind.

That's 100% a video of what never to do with a truck, a hitch ball and a chain, it's not designed for that and is downright stupid dangerous.. Recent video of a truck being rescued where the ball killed the driver of the vehicle being rescued.

Oh crap. Forgot to add the disclaimer. The intent of my post was to share my personal experience pulling a stump in my backyard with my R1T. This is not a "How to Pull a Stump" tutorial. Do you own research.

If you're referring the vehicle recovery accident in Arizona, they were using a MASSIVE drop hitch which failed, not the ball. Vehicle recovery vs pulling a stump are 2 totally different situations. I think it'd be helpful to not draw comparisons between the 2.

Twice, you've applied a whole lot of pulling pressure. Both times, the weak spot wound up being the stump. What if it weren't?

I wouldn't advise others to try this. Consider checking for potential underground hazards, then renting a backhoe and maybe an experienced backhoe operator.

Very best wishes!

Well, a few things could happen. The chain could snap. The ball could shear. The receiver hitch pin could shear. The sky could fall. But more than likely the tires would lose traction and spin. What exactly is a whole lot of pulling pressure? I think you mean force. We can make assumptions and speculate what the pulling force was, but without a dynamometer, it's just that, speculation.

I don't think the folks on this forum would want to watch a video of that. I sure as hell wouldn't :CWL:

You would catch a little less flack if you spent a few bucks and got a shackle mount instead of using a ball. This isn't too bad or go for the Factor 55 mount and supply your own shackle.

You, sir, don't understand how we, the people, spend our Sunday afternoons. I literally watched a video on an electric backhoe while working out today, then went nextdoor and watched my neighbor and his backhoe friend remove multiple stumps from his front yard.

Would be easy enough just using a hitch pin and looping the chain through it inside the receiver. Shackle is obviously better, but OP might be able to do the above without needing to buy anything.

Pulling stumps that way is SO much faster than using a come-along, shovel, pick, root saw, and Pulaski ?
