Is there a downside to using the maximum regenerative setting? I like using but wonder if it is not meant for everyday use.

Potentially more wear on the tires if you're just lifting your foot of the pedal every time instead of easing off gradually. I'm always on max regen.

the downside of quick braking is probably increased risk of being rear ended by someone in a non-OPD car.

The tick/tock clunking is more mild on standard. I personally think the regen is way too heavy on high and stay in standard or Snow mode for low regen.

Slowing down faster will wear the tires faster (regenerative or friction). If you're in conserve mode, it's just using two wheels, so you'll see more wear on those two. In my electric cars, I tend to stay partial throttle as I approach a stop (for passenger comfort and tires), but I'd rather regen the energy than have it go to friction if I need to stop more quickly. So, it's better to use the high regen, but you may want to modulate the throttle more.

Possibly forgetting how to drive a "normal" car.
So true! I drove my girlfriends outback today and almost crashed it when pulling out of the driveway as I forgot to hit the brake. Driving it felt weird and the reaction time lost having to move my foot between pedals felt really pronounced. I too have my R1S on High regen and love it.

In states where they salt the roads for winter max regen means less brake usage which can lead to rotor corrosion, and in VT, not passing inspection. I keep mine at the lower setting to at least occasionally get my brake calipers on the rotors.

It does clamp the breaks right before stopping, for sure not the amount for a full break operation but there is some friction going on there.

Last month at the Chelsea MA service center I was told that Rivians in NH, Vermont and Maine were at higher risk of accelerated brake pad wear and that premature brake pad wear was no longer "under the warrantee". I am planning on having the pads looked at by my mobile tech crew in the autumn when I change the tires. Maybe we have more sand on our roads? Just a heads up for norther new englanders

I ran in to this same issue with my model 3 (which was traded in for the model y before needing rotor replacement). I now, as you mention, have my mechanic check and clean the rotors (if necessary) on both the model y and rivian.

We have gotten used to OPD with the high regen and really like it. I do not fond any issues when I jump into the Silverado and take off. The transition is seamless.
