I was delivered my R1 in Jan2024 without paying for it.
Full story - I had a 2021 R1S reservation with lower original quad pricing and full tax credit. Originally had a VIN finally first assigned in September 2023. Lender paid RIvian. Rivian wasn't able to deliver as they had estimated, I had an extended trip where I left the country so I released the VIN. Rivian refunded me the $80k - which was actually difficult as they just randomly sent a check to my house and I was on the other side of the world. Eventually I was able to deposit the check into my savings account. Well 3 months later I requested delivery again and got a new VIN. Asked rep how I can pay - he insisted multiple times it was already paid so I don't need to pay.
So I wasn't sure if bank paid twice since I had listed them as lienholder again on new VIN paperwork or what but I still had the $80k in savings account those 3 months but was paying interest on the loan the whole time with lender.
Vehicle was delivered in Jan2024 without me paying. Lender then called wondering why they still didnt have title. I said I'd look into it and get it to them ASAP as I just finally got the vehicle delivered.
Wasn't sure if Rivian would send the title somewhere or what, I had lender listed as lienholder so the title should go to the bank.
A few days later (probably now multiple weeks after delivery) while traveling I get a panicked call from Rivian rep that I still needed to pay. I said that yeah that might finally makes sense, and questioned him if this scenario happens often at Rivian. He said it sure shouldn't. At first Rivian was going to comp me some gear store items but instead we negotiated a $1k refund for wasting my time. Rivian didn't take my money when initially getting the new VIN assigned or all of that VIN paperwork processed.
Was worried I'd get screwed on interest rates since they had risen so much from my original loan - but I have larger relationship with the lender (local credit union) and they eventually agreed to just assign the original loan to the new VIN.
So all worked out in the end for me fine. No didn't end up with a free Rivian which comically almost seemed like it might happen. As a Rivian stockholder I was pretty concerned that they have processes in place where a delivery of a vehicle can take place without the customer paying. I think a lot of people wouldn't have just kept 80k sitting in the bank and been able to pay later when the rep called back. Kind of regret I didn't just let it all ride on one big bet in vegas as then I'd have had a real chance at a truly free Rivian!
Anybody else get their R1 delivered without paying?
