Anyone reconsidering their R2 reservation?

Do you still plan to convert your R2 reservation into an order?

I originally had a CT on order and was interested in an SUV as well. Tesla didn't have one, and the R2 seemed like a good option. I didn't buy the CT and bought an R1T, and I am now totally reconsidering my R2 purchase for a myriad of reasons.

Rivian service is already stretched thin it seems and with long wait times. I think it will get worse, probably much worse, at least in the year the R2 debuts. So getting my R1 or possibly R2 serviced will be much worse.

The wind noise issue that I've seen to some extent in all Rivians I've driven is worse than it should be. Who knows if the R2 will be any better and this wind noise has soured me a lot on the brand. Especially given how much work I've put in to mitigate and it is still worse than it should be.

Overall I have a lot more concerns about the R2 now than before I became the owner of an R1. I see the challenges the brand is facing from the inside. There are clearly some headwinds and the R2 is a make or break product for Rivian. If they don't deliver, I think it will crush the brand.

There are a lot of things I love about my truck, don't get me wrong, but it has been a pretty sobering experience in a lot of ways. I understand the challenges of a startup and bringing a new brand and models to the public. I've worked for 2 extremely well known car manufacturers, so the effort isn't lost on me. I also come from an engineering background.

The things that really annoy me is how quickly they dead-ended the Gen 1 trucks with software. How many issues my truck has experienced so far. Now I have a new with some clunk that sounds like the fasteners they had to retorque earlier. The continuing wind noise saga. Just look at all the threads here on wind noise. I drove Gen 2 trucks and they have it too. Having to find a DIY fix to deal with vampire drain. That is like EV 101 stuff to minimize energy loss. It is like having a hole in your gas tank that continually leaks fuel. Overall, it costs Gen 1 owners likely over $10,000,000 annually on a collective basis.

I was a Day 1 R2 reservation holder but is an opportunity to order came up tomorrow, I'd probably wait a bit before I pulled the trigger, if I did. So at this point, I am likely a maybe or more of an R3X aficionado than R2. Having the R1 in a lot of ways has negated the need/desire for an R2. Since ownership my opinion of the brand has gone from a 10 to a 7 based on my experience. That factors in how much I love driving the truck, terrible Driver+, the issues I've had, the service center quality of work, rework, wait times, etc.

This isn't to complain about Rivian. Everyone's experience is different. I am curious to see how many people are still interested in an R2 at this point who reserved one earlier. I setup the poll to allow for 2 selections. So you could be a maybe but you think your ownership experience could be better.

I would buy it today and take delivery if it was available

I recently cancelled my R2 reservation as there are too many unknowns to deal with on a vehicle that isn’t around before 2026 at the earliest.

I too am worried about about reliability and service. I love the idea of owning Rivian. It seems like the R2 would be the perfect first EV for me. I wish Rivan was as focused on improving quality and reliability as they are on getting the price down. Even though I was a first day reservation holder I have decided to wait a year of so after they start to deliver before deciding to buy or not. This will allow Rivian to work some of the bugs out of the new model. If there seems to be a lot of issues with the suv I will not buy. With the nearest service center like 400 miles away It is very concerning to me. I do wish Rivian would allow 3rd party mechanics to be certified to service their vehicles to greatly expand their service network.

I have had thoughts of “do I really want to own a new model and first year of it again?”.

At least this time there’s a new service center 30min away instead of 3hr!

I am reserving judgment till production vehicles get delivered to regular retail customers not NDA bound employee customers. With that in mind, the first question I will ask retail owners will be "is there any vampire drain" and if the answer is "yes, x miles /day" I will instantly request my deposit back. Vampire drain is completely avoidable, both our i3 and Jeep Wrangler 4xe have zero vampire drain over even a weeks time.

I put down my R2 reservation during the launch event.

Then when the R3/R3X was revealed, I cancelled my R2, expecting to reserve an R3X shortly.

Then immediately after the event, I re-reserved an R2, mostly just hoping that they allow "rollover" from an R2 to an R3X reservation.

I’ve had great luck with my early vin (1663) R1S, if my wife did not want a smaller vehicle I would by her an R1S now.

Since she wants something a little smaller, I plan on getting whatever configuration they have released when my number comes up. The Model S she is driving is getting old.

I’m assuming it might be the tri-motor but if it is a dual I’m fine with that. Current environment is probably going to impact supply chains and cost so it’s hard to plan on actual release date, configuration, and cost right now, but, still planning on the purchase.

No why, it's refundable and I reserved two. It's a reservation, no reconsideration needed until the time for decision comes.

Also reserved 2 Scouts and 2 Volvos (recently cancelled as they're 20K more than expected). Reserved a Lightning, which I cancelled, a Mach E , cancelled, a Maverick (purchased), a 911 (cancelled to buy R1T), GX550 cancelled, Land Cruiser also cancelled. I've recycled the same deposits and just bought what I wanted over the past few years. Used to be called Blockbuster video shopping, grab everything on the shelves and sort it out at the register.

Love the Rivian experience!

Pretty confident I'm never going back to an ICE vehicle.

I haven't seen enough specifics about the R2, nor gotten a feel for driving it.

So I need more information and experience.

Our situation could also change in a year. We'll see. So I replied, "Maybe."

Best to all!

We are. We've loved the R1T and decided to purchase a late model ('24) R1S dual instead of waiting another year. R1 is bigger than we need, but love the suspension and the extra space will be nice on occasion.

I also really don't like the new electronic door handles. If the R2 rear emergency release as unsafe as the Gen 2 R1, I'm happy to stick with Gen 1 for a while.

Lots of Teslas, Future: R2
The only reason I haven't requested a refund is that someone @ Rivian told me directly that they haven't 100% scrapped the fold-flat front seats for the production model. We've basically become a single-issue-buyer since we're onboard w/everything else (for better or for worse) the R2 has to offer at this point save for that one item. Once Rivian officially confirms this feature has been removed for the production R2 we'll refund as it doesn't offer the biggest feature that would separate that vehicle from the Model Y for our use. I know there's lots of differences but that was the one revolutionary idea that caused us to want one.

I wouldn’t hesitate to buy an R2 based on my R1 experience. I’d probably wait for the second year of production though. I’ve reached my limit of early adopter issues across multiple products.

My assumption is that the sales & support function will dramatically expand as the R2 comes online. Their service footprint is currently designed for 50k/vehicles per year in sales. They need to build the capability to support roughly 4x that number for 2026/2027. It’s a whole different level of service business.

I don’t have an R2 reservation simply because I’m not looking to buy a car in the next few years.
