Taking my 2023 R1T Quad motor/large pack from Austin to Anchorage. After lots of research and some much appreciated in input from Ryan Watts of Van in Black, I am feeling pretty confident about the trip. Planning to use ABRP combined with the onboard navigation to chart our course. The truck has 20” AT with brand new OEM Pirelli Scorpion tires at 50 PSI. It is also outfitted with an IKamper 3.0 Mini tent mounted on Rivian cargo crossbars over the bed. I also have a Kuat Sherpa 2.0 bike rack. After doing some range/efficiency drives around Austin, I decided to start the trip with bikes loaded in the bed of the truck and the rack folded up. Seems a little silly, but I want to have the rack with me in Anchorage so I am bringing it. I hope to get better range in this configuration. All my range testing was done it standard drive mode. Any thoughts on standard vs conserve mode? It will be hard but planning to stick to 65mph as much as possible.

Our route is through Colorado, Wyoming and Montana then on to the Yukon, Alcan Highway then finally to Anchorage. Planning to do the trip in 10 days. We hope to use Level 3 charge as often as possible, Tesla, RAN and whatever other networks we find. We will be sleeping in the tent and ideally use RV parks to charge at night whenever possible. It appears that Canada has a pretty robust charging infrastructure so I feel pretty good about that but the areas of most concern are Wyoming, Montana, and Alaska. Any first hand input on the most recent status of chargers in Wyoming, Montana, and/or Alaska would be appreciated.

Will be trying to post updates and photos here and possibly on another platform yet to be determined.

On road trips I use conserve mode when on long interstate highways and the weather is good. If weather is not good or I'm on non-interstates I use all purpose. Also, I use conserve mode at 55 mph if I really need to stretch the range. Keep in mind that as you drive into higher elevations your range will decrease - it will also increase when you are descending from higher elevations.

I'll be following this one! We were planning on a similar trip this summer - starting in Minneapolis though. We're changing it up a bit now. Driving to Washington and taking the ferry to Haines...then on to Anchorage and the Kenai. My wife and I met in Alaska 30+ years ago and this is our retirement trip.

Have a great time!

FOLLOWING! Anchorage is on my short list for PCS next year.

Any thoughts on standard vs conserve mode?
Once you get to Whitehorse, quality DCFC gets sparse quick. I highly recommend using Conserve on the last couple days to stretch your safety margin.

You can use it the whole trip and it'll save you money for sure, but across that wide distance you're bound to have at least one moment where you go "man, I wish I kept it in All Purpose to avoid that [INSERT PROBLEM HERE]."

I do not recommend Low mode with stock 20" 275/65R20 tires. Yes, Low will also increase MPK, but you'll definitely bottom out on bumps, even in firm.

ideally use RV parks to charge at night whenever possible.
Be sure to check PlugShare reviews or call them first to ask, some places aren't as friendly to EV use as others. If they hesitate or question, quickly offer to compensate.

Sounds like an awesome trip. I’m headed thru Wyoming and Montana in a couple of months. Biggest issue will be Wyoming. Only fast chargers north is on I-25 near Casper and I-90 in Gillette. They both have a Tesla and EA charger. Then the next fast charger isn’t until Billings Montana 240 or 270 miles away. There is a 50kw charger in Sheridan Wyoming buts only one at a Jeep dealership. So I’ll be going from Denver to Cayenne to Gillette to Billings in conserve. Tesla has a charger coming soon in Buffalo Wyoming that would greatly help but I don’t think it’s under construction yet. When are you going?

I agree with @Deacon, You get about 10% better efficiency on highways in conserve. Not a ton more but can give you another 15 miles on a 150 mile stretch.

I’ve done several 5500-7500 mile trips, back roads or iffy weather, all purpose standard height, highway stretches conserve in low I find to be the most comfortable.

Good luck and safe travels on the trip! Looking forward to seeing updates and pictures so we can all share in this epic journey.

Did a 5000 mi trip in a 2023 R1S Quad from PA to Colorado, S Dakota and back. No drama, great experience, kids asking for another road trip now 🙂 Check your tires - if your alignment is off you can get it straightened out at Discount Tire along the way, otherwise tires may get chewed out and efficiency may take a hit. I drove most time on All Purpose, only used Conserve (and drove slower) when needed. I set Driver+ to 75mph and enjoyed the ride - wishing you the same!

Looking forward to updates. WY is sparse. It's been a little while, but I've used the EA in Casper multiple times with my Ioniq 5 and it's always provided the peak power the car can accept (235kW) with an optimum charging curve for every session. It's in a convenient location, with multiple food/shopping options in easy walking distance. The only other vehicle I've ever encountered when using the chargers was the support car for the American Solar challenge (collegiate teams "racing" solar only cars, last year from TN to Casper), which was a fun conversation.

Good luck and please report back on your experience.

If you plan to pass through Dallas, let me know if you need a back-up adapter to borrow just in case.

I personally like to carry the OEM Tesla adapter and A2Z EV Typhoon Pro adapter with me to have as a backup. The last adapter I try to use the most is the Level 2 AC adapter to charge at hotels with free or reduced charging overnight and avoid expense fast charging on the go.

A2Z EV has a sale going on right now for NACS to CCS1 adapters ($170 to $127.50) / A2Z EV Stellar NACS to J-1772 AC Level 2 Adapter ($95 to $72) after discount code to save 25% off and get free shipping.

Click the link to chose your below products and stack the temporary code "FLASHSPRING" to save 25%.

New orders: Current estimate for A2Z is shipping will take 2 weeks for the new Typhoon Pro adapter. Still in time for travel plans in June.

You can bundle the A2Z Stellar AC Tesla to J-1772 adapter for Hotel Destination charger for $73 additional after discount by adding both into your cart. This adapter is used with Tesla home chargers or Tesla Destination chargers which are commonly found at hotels, parking lots, shopping centers and Airbnb.

A2Z EV Typhoon Pro NACS To CCS1 adapter - DCFC adapter - DC adapter 500A

A2Z EV NACS TO CCS1 Adapter - Save 25% / Free Shipping + bundle the A2Z Stellar AC NACS to J-1772 adapter for $72 additional after discount code "FLASHSPRING".

A2Z EV NACS to J-1772 - AC adapter for home / hotel destination chargers - 80A

A2ZEV NACS To J1772 adapter (Hotel Destination Charger for Hotels / Shopping centers) | Up to 80A | 20kW | 12 Months Warranty
