Wow, the amenities have really improved since my friends and I did the Alaska highway, from what I remember.

Essentially hands free driving discovered by accident on the road from Helena to Great Falls, MT!! I saw posts referring to Rivian making this available but wasn’t paying enough attention to figure out when or how to access it, too much to deal with getting prepared for the trip/move. You’d think I would have looked into it since it would be so helpful on a trip like ours?! Anyway I did the latest update last night in Bozeman but didn’t see what was in it! 😬 Up to now all we were using was the crappy lane assist then for some reason, while driving up I15, I double clicked the right side control stick and the lane turned blue and everything changed! Was it the update or did we have it available all along? Pretty awesome turn of events.

We are currently charging at a Tesla SC in Great Falls, also know as Groundhog Station! There are 3 Teslas, first time we have seen this many EVs in days. We met a nice local named Caden. I have a feeling that trend may continue?

No real problems with charging to report yet other than the minor incident in Clayton, NM. The main issue we are having following the recommended charging time at each stop, we always charge longer.

Now on to Canada! šŸ‡ØšŸ‡¦

I believe the hands free (Driver+) has been available since the beginning. Glad you found it. Onward to Canada!

Are you taking I-15 all the way or cutting over to Glacier NP via Browning?

Would have been nice to detour to Glacier but we went straight up I-15. We are making pretty progress so planning to take some detours in Canada. We want to stop at Head-Smashed-in Buffalo Jump but it was closed!

I knew there was driver assist but not like what we are getting now! So much I don’t about this truck and I’ve had it for more than two years!

Tesla SC in Whitecourt, Alberta. 4 plugs, all vacant. Hard to believe Ryan Watts did this trip from NC and back without access to Tesla charging!

I started planning this trip with ABRP and initially it seemed like it was recommending Tesla SCs efficiently. I also used PlugShare to back up the route. As I reported earlier, right before setting out, ABRP was not recommending Tesla SCs. The R1T, however was primarily directing us to Tesla and RAN SCs and giving us a slightly different route. I decided to follow the R1T route and we had no problems, except the issue in Clayton described earlier. I even set ABRP to preferential choose Tesla and it still didn’t seem to work?? I gave up on ABRP.

My original route took us by Slave Lake, which I was looking forward to but after Edmonton the R1T changed the route to Whitecourt (Tesla SC), Valleyview (Tesla SC) and then rejoined our original route in Dawson Creek (BC Hydro).

When we got to Valleyview, the Tesla chargers were off line! We couldn’t charge via my Rivian account or the Tesla app. The charging stop also disappeared from the navigation in the R1T. We had enough charge to get down the road to Grand Prairie to use the Flo charger (L2) at the Cadillac dealership. We added ~25kWh in over an hour of charging time, enough to get us to Dawson Creek.

If that hadn’t worked, there seemed to be plenty of RV parks, so I think we wouldn’t have been stranded.
