Mirrors don't tilt down on reverse. Cameras don't have a good dynamic range, so if it's a sunny day and your parking spot is shaded the video is too dark to see anything.

What's going to happen when people start using these as work trucks? If you've ever worked on a construction site or farm, operators are always getting in and out all the time and driving with the doors open.

I barely lifted myself to get a better angle of the curb in the side mirror since they don't tilt down and the vehicle parked. First time it happened I had no idea what's going on.

I use the "butt in the air" method when backing the boat down a steep ramp... it's the only way to see what the extreme back of the boat is doing (coming too close to the floating dock, etc..) because it's way below the rear view mirror coverage.
Reportedly, releasing the seatbelt will disable the shifting into park behavior.. guess I'll find out when I get my truck.
Agree. I do the same backing my boat into my bank barn. It’s a ramp up, and when the trailer goes onto the level barn floor, the truck is still on the angled ramp and the mirrors and camera are pointed at the inside roof of the barn, not the trailer.

This has only happened to me once after the cameras froze (a recurring issue that resists Rivian service attempts and is annoyingly intermittent) and I had to lift up to see over the tailgate. It has not happened when lifting up to, um, rearrange my cargo on a long drive. Makes me think the sensors in our seats are perhaps not equally sensitive to liftoff.

And if @DynoSaur wants to get their butt in the air, like they just don’t care, then I, for one, do not want to interfere…even if I’d prefer a working camera. Rivian already implemented a rear accessory option for disabling the warning chime when something’s behind the tailgate, I’m sure they could also implement a rear levitation option while backing up.

I am responding to this based on my experiences driving a Tesla Model 3 and learning to depend upon my back up cameras, which do seem to be accurate in giving me a complete picture of my surroundings. You have to trust the technology a bit more, I think. I still do look around, in a sweep--but depend upon the cameras.

Several vehicles don't allow reverse while seat belt is not buckled and either the door is open or no butt in seat (either or). Solution is to buckle your seat. It's starting to become the norm and it wouldn't surprise me that there is some regulation somewhere that requires it (and manufacturers usually try and implement these globally).

That said, it does seem the seat sensor could be more sensitive as I find myself buckling to reverse my trailer into tight spots. I would love to see a drivetrain menu button in "tow" and "off-road" to allow for door open/seat sensor off (if they even can).

I know someone who is a pro at this butt stuff, maybe she has the answers you seek @DynoSaur
I like your problem solution! She needs to get over here and break it for me.

Hood surfing here I come!

Also. I cannot tell you how often on long road trips, I stretch my legs by arching up and taking my butt off the seat, or I need to rearrange “goods” for comfort that require a little lift up off the seat.

Wait...if you lift your butt off the seat while driving what happens? A warning? Or does the car stop at highway speeds haha
