Hey, y'all! Quick question. I am a current reservation holder with the binding agreement, so would qualify for the tax credit on a new Rivian R1T; however, I do not have the pre-March pricing. Given this, I have been looking at used R1T's as a possible alternative for the obvious pricing benefits (~$20k cheaper than new). I have found one that I think fits what I am looking for.

My question is: are there any downsides to buying used? I'm looking at a Launch Edition in the 5XXX range, so it has all the original stuff (Meridian Audio, 12v chargers, etc). ~5,000 miles on it. The warranty should (I need to call) transfer. Has a working power tonneau, comes with some extras. Is there a downside I'm missing?

Just looking for thoughts and possible reassurance, lol. Appreciate any guidance on this!

I bought a used R1T a few weeks ago. Had very low miles (3,000) and was for sale in my local area so I was able to test drive it and check for anything that might have been “off” with the vehicle. In the end, I saved myself almost $20K and I have a virtually brand new truck that I absolutely LOVE. I have ZERO regrets about buying it used. I didn’t investigate any potential warranty issues, but I’d have a hard time seeing why Rivian wouldn’t honor the original warranty unless something weird has been done to the vehicle to void it.

The only part of the process that was a little clunky was the ownership transfer on Rivian’s end. It took about 10 days because the transfer was submitted just before the weekend of July 4th and that team was out of the office for several days. Point is, when you buy the car, it will have the original owner’s name on the screen every time you drive it until they transfer it over to you. It’s a pretty easy process, but it’s not instant. They tell you to expect 5-7 business days for the transfer to take place.

Isn't the "Binding Agreement" an issue here?

Otherwise, only 5K miles is practically new. My LE R1T with a 6xxx VIN has 29K. Even the powered tonneau still works.

The only reason to not buy that used R1T would be if it was black. I'm not a fan of owning black vehicles.

I purchased mine used as well. LE with 3k miles on it for well under what a new one would cost. Great decision, I've been in love with the truck. Only took about a week for me to have rivian transfer the app access.

You might lose the deposit you made to Rivian for your reservation, if you've already made the final changes to your truck. But, saving $20K more than covers that.
New Vehicle Warranty is for the vehicle, from the date it was original put into service. They have to warranty any truck they build and sell for the warranty period reflected, regardless of how many times it may have sold since.

The tonneau cover was one of the big plus items for me. Would have struggled to buy a newer one that does have it. Also, I was pre-price hike. Would have struggled to spend close to $100K for my truck. If I didn't have mine and wanted one today, my only option would be a used one as I want the quad motor, tonneu, 12v plug in the frunk and more importantly, don't want to pay over $80,000 for it.

You probably wouldn't qualify for the Fed tax credit since you post-hike pricing. So, if you find a clean one that has what you want, I wouldn't hesitate. Plus, you don't have to wait forever to get it.

Best of luck to you.

Thanks y’all! Definitely solidified my decision. I’ll go back over the agreement, but I think only $100 was non-refundable under the agreement. I haven’t finalized my build yet, so I don’t think it would be an issue. Just gotta send an email/make a call.

I’m probably going to do the same thing. The used prices are making this happen sooner for me.

Foolishly cancelled our 2nd deposit with pre-increase pricing and binding pre purchase agreement => full refund. Put down another deposit thereafter. Wish I had not cancelled the second deposit but little to no benefit with my 3rd deposit. 6k miles on my R1S with the first deposit.

R1S - April 2021 preorder
Agree with everyone else. I have pre price increase pricing on my R1S, otherwise, I’d absolutely buy a used R1S or T. Someone else would likely have already had to deal with random issues like 12V, etc.
