Thought I'd post this for others who didn't know this. I've taken my R1T to the full service carwash multiple times and have used carwash mode but yesterday for the first time took it to one of those do-it-yourself carwashes with the sprayers and wands, etc. I didn't think i really needed to put it in carwash mode since I was just going to use the high pressure sprayers for a quick cleanup but while spraying the truck it activated the charging port door which popped open, assuming from the warm water hitting the sensor. I stopped right away and closed the door then avoided that area while I finished up. When I got back in the truck it said I needed to reboot the screen which I did but then I got the message that Drive Mode was disabled and to service the car! Yikes! I did a hard reset which cleared up the problem. Phew! So lesson learned to always use carwash mode when washing the car even manually!

Not sure why people have ever been convinced otherwise.

Always have used car wash mode - when washing my Rivian. Good to see you’re not dead in the soapy water as it were.

The port door does open but I just close it and move on. No problems yet. Didn’t even know there was a car wash mode lol
This is exactly what car wash mode solves because also when the sensor gets too wet, you can’t close the door again. Then you need to open up the truck and close it from the infotainment screen (or now thanks to the latest update from the app).

I've always just locked the R1 before washing at home - seems easier than remembering carwash mode.

Just washed by hand yesterday. Foam cannon the car all the time. The port door does open but I just close it and move on. No problems yet. Didn’t even know there was a car wash mode lol

That's what I thought too when the port door opened. I did have to open the truck and close it from the screen, then finished up and didn't think anything of it. Freaked out when it wouldn't go into drive mode! Had an appointment to get to so was praying the hard reset would fix it. Plus a guy in an ICE pickup was waiting for the stall and I didn't want the embarrassment of telling him my EV shut down, doh!

NGL this doesn't sound related to car wash mode at all.

Using car wash mode is a convenience thing made so you don't have flaps opening/closing, wipers going, etc. It doesn't have anything to do with drive systems/safety systems.

I could be wrong, but it sounds like you had some other issue happening that just coincidentally happened to be at the car wash (or probably triggered by the water)

I’ve washed my car myself many times since owning this vehicle since December 23. I have never set car wash mode and I have not experienced any issues with the charge port opening. I’m pretty sure the truck is locked and Bluetooth on my phone is always off.

I think something else is going on here.

I always use carwash mode so that the door handles are also flushed and the charge port does not open when i wipe the area.

Looks like a coincidence, and perhaps open a service request to rule out any other issues. I have washed my R1S many times at home and never enabled car wash mode.

I have had issues with sensor being blocked ('sensors disabled' message and subsequently replaced by mobile tech), but he confirmed it was not because of washing the car, etc.

It looks merely a coincidence in this case.

I agree this seems like pure coincidence. Car wash mode doesn't effect screens, safety sensors, etc. Purely disables the door handles and charge port door.

No, I called customer service about it and they said water getting in the port could cause this issue.

Well yes, if your car is locked and bluetooth off you won't trigger the port. I suspect it's cold weather and with warm water being sprayed. CS confirmed that getting water in the port could cause the issue. So either do what you do, lock the car with bluetooth off, or put it in car wash mode.
