Over the past few days, I’ve been getting a “Warm Plug Detected” error at various Tesla chargers with my Rivian. The vehicle hasn’t been sitting in the sun, and the weather has been relatively cool, so I don’t think it’s a temperature-related issue.

Curious if others have seen this recently or know of a fix.

Happens to me charging at home if the garage is above 60 so i’ve learned to accept it, if i’m in a hurry i turn on a fan and the problem is resolved.

Seen it a few times on Tesla chargers I know are older stations. Moving to another open spot has resolved it. A rare event for me. Never get the warning at any other DC charger (multiple brands) nor at home.

Could be dirty charger pins. Check out this thread Melted plugs.

If the truck detects the charge port getting too hot too quickly, it will reduce the charging power to protect itself. This can happen when the cooling system on the charging cable isn't performing well or there is contamination in the charging pins. I'll add that I'd the truck didn't protect itself, the cable could get welded to the truck.

If it works fine with other brands of chargers, and in fair weather, I'd suggest switching to a different Tesla SC and checking the pins.

I am going to vote for dirty pins even on less than 3 month old SC. Here's a picture of my swabs at 2 different SCs from a couple of months ago.

Update: Tried 4 different Tesla chargers and even an EVGO DC fast charger. Also hard reset — same error every time. Looks like the issue is with the vehicle, not the chargers.

Have you tried cleaning the pins on the vehicle? They could be dirty from a previous session at a charger that was dirty.

Possibly the high power cable connected to the charge port has loosened

I don't get it on L3 chargers but regularly get it on my home charger when it’s above about 55*. Didn’t happen my first year of ownership though, only started in the second, maybe I’ll try cleaning the pins.

You’ve had good luck by just putting a fan on it? Interesting. I had some luck by reducing the amp rating from 48 to 35-40.

Ya it’s been working pretty good for me especially if the fan is really blowing than the error will be gone in 5 minutes.

I had this issue on L2 home charger. I cleaned plug and vehicle socket, but still happened. New EVSE fixed it.

For L3 DCFC I would recommend cleaning the vehicle side. If it continues a service ticket is all I can recommend.

I had this happen at Tesla and EA stations but oddly not RAN stations. I’d bounce around between 60kW and 200 kW for a bit then get the slightly terrifying warning saying “charging stopped, plug locked. Wait 15 seconds to disconnect.”

There was an issue with the temperature sensor in the charge port. I spoke to the tech who said the charging logs showed the positive pin had some outrageously high temperature and the negative pin was showing something normal.

Get a service appointment booked and document the dates/times you had charging issues in the ticket. I think my tech said logs are kept for a few months (but don’t quote me on that).
