Can't say I am surprised. Still love my R1S but yeah they aren't coming out of the factory trouble free.

FWIW I am a CR subscriber and was never sent a survey to complete. I would have actually been honest with the survey. My first R1S (my current vehicle is my second) had a catastrophic rear motor failure 20 miles from the service center which led eventually to a buy back. But I did give Rivian a second chance and the second vehicle is not without its issues (in 6 months it has been in service center three times and mobile service 3 times) but at least the rear drive unit didn't self destruct. So the poor reliability rating is deserved at this juncture, but hopefully they can improve QC at the factory to resolve this and take pressure off the overworked service centers.

Miles of smiles... c'mon, you're telling me that a Rivian is less reliable than a Jeep 4Xe or VW? I'm not buying it. Also, remember that Dodges solution for extended range is to drive around with a 6 cylinder gas eng8ne in the trunk. Amazing.

Would really like to see the number of respondents per manufacturer.

The most bizarre stat from this article is even though they were last in overall reliability they were first in owner satisfaction. ??

The early adopter fanaticism will wear off quickly once the masses start purchasing the vehicles and realize this isn't a set it and forget it Toyota. I think most of us here will agree we have dealt with some sort of issue with the vehicle, and since most here are very techy, have been able to work with Rivian either with service or the eventual software updates to resolve many of them. The average driver doesn't even remember to change their oil and drives around with the low gas light on. Communicating with service using the app will be a foreign concept. Going to an EV will be a challenge for them.

Consumer reports are done by a bunch of people who barely know how to use a computer. If you read the review of the R1S the author basically hit their caveman club against the screen and whined about OPD.

They don’t have the best automotive journalists for sure.

I'd still love to know who they're even surveying on this. I'm an online subscriber and used to get the car survey, but haven't received it in well over a decade now. So they sure don't have this owner's opinions represented.

Are they qualified to review an automobile and provide other "ratings" for automobiles.. 100% not!

Possibly, also possible that including the 2022 year 1 vehicles may have skewed the data for Rivian in this particular article, especially since we do not see the data behind the analysis.

I have almost 2 years and 26k miles on my early 2022 R1S, have had 2 issues, both in the first 4 months, one was a bad module causing OTAs to fail and one was a slow leak causing the air suspension to sag after sitting overnight. Neither prevented me from using the vehicle as intended and both were fixed.

In my experience having purchased over 15 new vehicles over the last 45+ years my Rivian experience has been on par with the other new vehicles I purchased. It may be worth noting there were 3 Subarus, who was number 1 on this latest list, included in my list of new vehicles.

I read their report before buying mine. I think it was pretty fair and balanced. I don't agree with everything said but I'd say they got it 90% right.

As for issues, mine is still in the shop with about 10 things that need to be fixed. That is more issues than my last 5 Teslas put together over a 4 year ownership period vs 2 months on my Rivian and about 60 times the aggregate miles.

Obviously Rivian has work to do and fortunately none of my issues are major but some are pretty annoying like not being able to open the truck with my key card, or it has no idea what temp you set the AC/heat to except for max cold or hot, and the list goes on. The drivetrain has been good other than the clicking up front and I have many of the TSB issues.

I'm surprised Fisker Ocean isn't ranked at the top. No one to call for complaints or nowhere to take it in for service = 100% reliability!!

"Every year, Consumer Reports asks its members about problems they’ve had with their vehicles in the previous 12 months. This year we gathered data on more than 300,000 vehicles from the 2000 to 2024 model years, with a few 2025 models that were introduced early enough to be included." Hardly a reliable sample.

If the reliability is dead last and owner satisfaction is in first place, does that mean:
  • Rivian is doing an exceptional job at keeping people happy?
  • Rivian makes a product that is unreliable but exceptional in every other way?
  • Rivian owners are dumb?
Which are true? ;)

There is also nothing like Rivian at this point. Once real completion arrives, Rivian needs to up their game to survive.

The R1T and R1S are unique vehicles that offer a combination that isn't found in the market today. Once competition catches up, it will be very important for these vehicles to be at least as reliable as their EV competitors. The early adopter enthusiasm creates high owner satisfaction levels - aka we all want Rivian to succeed. Of your options above, I would say #2 is accurate.
