Title:

For the mere 30 miles my car was working I did manage to capture all 30 glorious miles of video using gearguard.

  • Crucial X9 1TB hard drive - Worked like a dream.
  • I have a Google Pixel 6 Pro.
Anyway,

If you are running an Android phone, you can just plug your drive into you phone, go to your photos app and browse the directories and watch the video. Just use the USB-C connector and if needed an adapter. This should work on an Apple Phone as well.

Simple as that. This is of course useful if you need to provide video evidence of the following:

  • Accident
  • Witness to accident
  • Bigfoot sightings
  • False Tickets from Police, Red-light Cameras etc.
  • Insurance Fraud attempts

Instructions:

  1. Plug in the drive to your phone
  2. (easiest) a pop-up will show in your notifications "USB device XX connected" Tap this notification.
    1. Alternately browse you phone using a 'folders' icon and locate the drive
  3. You will be at the root of the drive directory now
  4. Select 'DriveCam"
  5. Select ' Drive Stream' folder (directory)
  6. Select the date /time for the videos you would like to watch
  7. Pick the video
  8. Finished

Very useful if you need to immediately access video away from your car.

Cheers,
Mike

Good heads up, especially if anyone is in accident, they can pull the footage if the vehicle is unresponsive while at the scene.

I do this with my iPhone.
I unplug the ssd from the truck, plug it into my iPhone 15 pro max (usb-c) and under the Files App it will show up and you can copy or save the files. I then plug it back into the truck and move on with walking into wherever I am going.

Who will develop some software to combine the 5 cameras into 1 x 360 view ;) that would be a nice way to watch the footage
Final Cut pro can decode 360 and make it an interactive experience. I'm sure it can stitch it all the views together.

My 3rd day of ownership a mature age person was new to riding motorcycles… had forgotten to put their visor down, was driving into the sun and didn’t see that the road is S curved ahead. They smashed into my drivers door and front fender..

it was all on video - even clearly showed me swerving towards the curb and stopping 1 ft from a telephone pole while on the brakes hard to avoid the collision. I didn’t need any of it as they accepted full responsibility, but the video was so helpful to us both as to exactly what happened. Kudos to Everyone responsible for the software and hardware that makes our cameras happen.
A broken elbow, fractured eye socket and expected bruising as after glancing off the truck they lost control and the bike threw the driver to the ground.
I already love the truck so much. I waited almost 3 months before I let a body shop have to do the repairs..

I did not know I could do this. I’m guessing it would also work with USB-C iPad Pro. Very nice feature!

I agree. There are websites that do just this for Teslacam footage:

https://sentrycam.video/
Any reason you can't just use that exact website with the Rivian dashcam videos? All the website does is synchronize the playing of local files on your sytem.

Does it have to be iphone with usb-c port? Mine is iphone 12 pro with lightning port - files would not play on it.

Should work either way you just need an adapter

I don't think it should be an issue with an adapter as LR4toR1S said, but I haven't had a phone that old in some time so I can't say for sure.

The files types are much older than your phone. There shouldn't be any issues. It may be the phone can't read the speed of your drive or something?
