I decided to build one of these since I couldn't find anything on the market that really satisfied what I was looking for. I wanted the spare out of the bed so that semi-permanent camping setup wouldn't have to get dumped on the side of the trail/freeway if we ever get a flat while we're going somewhere to camp. It didn't turn out quite exactly how I envisioned it, but it's definitely serviceable. It sort of tucks in where there is dead space between the truck and the tent when it's open. Bed is fully accessible.

I've tightened everything up a bit further since these photos, but it's night time now, so hard to get a good photo of it. Trying to come up with a solution to relocate the license plate right now.

I'm debating setting it up so I'd be able to also have a hitch bike rack on the swing out part, but I don't think it would quite work the way I'd want it to with the tent.

Any reason for building one vs buying one? (ie, comparability, size, weight, etc.?)

Most impressive that you were able to get a spare tire.

This is great! I’ll probably do something similar to mine for the same reasons (difficulty of access when hauling on trips). I’d like to weld a spindle to the bumper support, though. Hopefully someone will have done this so I can copy it before I get to it.

Any concern the wheel could be stolen?
I ran the gear guard cable through it. Fits out the bottom of the tailgate in the corner just barely. Someone for sure could try to steal it.

Most of the ones I've seen only swing out of the way enough to access the rear of the vehicle, I wanted it to swing so it would basically be under the rooftop tent and out of the way.

Well, it survived our first trip down to Hocking Hills. Need to make some changes to it still.

Nice work on the spare tire rack but talk about the rails that you have for the awning... DIY or aftermarket? All looks nice!

Some 80/20 extrusion and angle fittings. I need to improve on it since this last time when I went to take the setup off my truck, I couldn't get one of the rivian cargo rails to unlatch as stuff seems like it might have shifted slightly after several months of use.

Wee haw it fits on the R1S too. Need to modify it to accept a bike rack on the swing though.
