I haven't submitted an issue to Rivian about this yet, but wanted to gauge the community. Now this issue doesn't always happen- but sometimes if I'm backing up and want to get a good look out the rear window, I'll push myself a bit higher up using my leg on the floor. This creates an EXTREMELY frustrating response of the vehicle assuming I've left the driver's seat so while backing up slowly, it suddenly decides to ram itself into P (park). Probably not as likely for taller drivers, but I do this pretty commonly in lots of vehicles- and I know it's been reported as problematic with other vendors.
Seems overly conservative when there are other hints that could be used to ensure the driver is present. e.g. Require one of drivers door close OR seat sensor OR speed < 3mph in R. If all 3 unmet, sure- shift into park. I'm really just curious if others have this issue- I already know it doesn't happen to everyone, so no need for a "works for me just fine" sound off. I do hope this gets addressed though.

Yup, this happened to be within the 1st week of ownership. Made a horrible grinding noise getting itself into Park. I've learned not to move my butt out of the seat while backing up, but annoying for sure.

Use your left foot on the brake at the same time and it will stop that behavior. It does it for safety, if something jostles you it could cause you to put your full weight into the accelerator, the acceleration of the vehicle can further cause it to be difficult to get out of that position immediately. Other foot on the brake stops it from being a concern

Appreciate the thought, but that won't really work, as I need to put weight down to lift myself up for better rear view. Rivian having concern over putting full weight on accelerator doesn't really make sense anyway. (they could easily electronically limit it if it was) Braking while using the accelerator also does not seem like a practice that should be encouraged.
I, and I'm sure others, have been using this practice to improve reverse view in cars without seat sensors for decades and haven't had a problem with sudden weight on accelerator.
I really wish they'd make more of these options tweakable in some advanced at-your-own-risk config panel or something.

i thought the R1S had issues when it happened to me, as long as you have some weight in the seat when you lift up to reverse you will be fine.

This happens to me at the boat ramp, so I buckle the seatbelt behind me and that prevents it from shifting in to park when I lift my butt off the seat in order to see down the ramp incline.

Turn on the 360 camera and you never need to contort yourself to look over your shoulder.
That’s a great way to smash into shit. Having 360° cameras is a great help but they frequently miss things you can easily see with your eyes.

Maybe you misunderstood - you still use your eyes, to look at the cameras which shows you everything around you and a rear view at the same time. And you can use your eyes AND ears to heat the proximity sensors.

Buckle your seatbelt and your problems will go away. Should be better documented.

I've never felt the need to lift my butt out of my seat when turning my head to see behind. I'm surprised how many people seem to think they need to stand up to back up.

How tall are you? My mom is 5’2 and only way for her to see.

I'm 6'0 and find myself lifting to back when I have a low height, short wheelbase utility trailer or dinghy attached to the back as they can be tough to track via mirrors.
