I saw this blurb on All Purpose too, and wondered if this was new to Performance as of this upgrade. BTW I got the email but already have the performance upgrade from the factory so can’t compare to a DM. I guess the Rivian marketers only keyed in on the original specs of the VIN, not how it was delivered. Also, interesting caveats. What is meant by “new vehicles”?

My name is Mike, and I have a (car) problem
I do enjoy driving and have the resources... the confirmation that HP unlock is NOT limited to sport mode has me even closer to jumping off the fence - but I just can't see to press the button!
I'll be honest, if there wasn't so much uncertainty vis a vis USA - Canada political situation, I think decision would be over. Man I hate Trump.
Sorry for the political injection, but that's literally the reason - I can't send money South right now. Dammit.
😡
Fair enough, and I don't blame you for your choice of where to send your money.

The extra fast is fun, though.

It's been the same. They're just clarifying because of rumors from owners.

Made the upgrade. Totally worth it for me personally. It’s not so much the extra speed, it’s the handling in Sport Mode.

If you both like driving and have the resources, get it. But the regular dual motor is great and if you don’t enjoy driving that much or you can’t imagine the handling being a benefit, skip it.
What’s the handling difference with Performance? Is this just implicit from the unlocked lowered ride height or does Performance unlock also provide tighter steering in Sport mode?

I don’t know how to say this but here is a comparison:

my 5.4 sec single motor long range model 3 feels way faster than the 4.5 sec R1T… 🤣

Visualize a small 50-seater commuter plane at takeoff vs a super jumbo 400 seater Dreamliner take off. From inside both planes, the 50 seater takeoff is more “exciting” - if I can say so - everything shakes and bumps. lot more noise - you get the thrill. The super jumbo gets up into air without any fanfare and faster - but it is “boring”. the quiet luxurious air-suspended Rivian feels slower even though faster than my M3 😀😀.
A 0.5sec reduction (for $5000 - interesting numbers!!) - will still feel like the same super jumbo quiet experience….”boring”. On the other hand. the Tri or Quad could be quite a diff story
I see your point. My kids used to complain our Mazda3 (with a respectable 168 bhp) was slow. I was able to get away with making engine revving sounds for a bit. Then they noted the car didn’t go any faster, just noisier.

Then I got a vehicle with a throaty exhaust and everyone complained I was driving too fast ( when I wasn’t).
Having motors that sound like quite turbines spinning up is awesome. Fun for me and the passengers get minimal audio clues of acceleration.

I think I read the go pedal mapping is different. (The old throttle mapping of ICE vehicles)

Cool find thanks for sharing.

It’s not the drive mode as much as it is the ride height that limits available power.

So you are punishing yourself because of the President of the United States?

Or they are avoiding sending money to the U.S. because the current policy of the U.S. is adversarial to their Country and started a "trade war" while openly talking about taking over their Country. In other words, it seems like a Canadian is behaving with a minimal level of unhappiness toward another Country that is behaving this way.

So back to the performance upgrade, I have loved it and I’m sure we’ll continue to see enhancements to the driving dynamics as new OTAs are pushed out.

Even leasing my vehicle, I don’t feel I over paid for the feature and use it every day. Can’t wait to see what Rivian comes up with to make the driving experience even more enjoyable. 🤙

The person you replied to is Canadian. The United States is trying to damage the Canadian economy and is threatening Canadian independence.

They aren't "punishing themselves" because of the President. They are doing what they can to not send money to a Country that is actively behaving like an adversary to the Country that they live in.

Are you serious? What is the trade imbalance between the two countries? Would we want another state like California in this great Union? The President is pulling their leg.

Canadians are taking it serious, yes. He and the white house has repeatedly said he is not joking as well. Whether he is or not, I cannot blame Canadians for acting in a way that they feel is appropriate when a Country starts behaving in an aggressive manner against them.
