I'll raise you a potentially even smarter decision would be to get a pre-owned 2022 Gen 1 R1T Quad Adventure or Launch for $55k less w/less than 30k miles. 2 years/30k left of warranty and literally half the price with 12Vs in the frunk and cabin and with a better (Meridian) sound system! I've seen half a dozen or so in that range.

But maybe that's just me justifying what I'm leaning hard towards doing :)
Sure. But I drove a '23 R1T quad that was at my Ford dealer. Can't remember the exact miles but it was under 15k. Priced at 63k I believe. That truck had so much wind noise and rattles it was an immediate no for us. Not sure if it was a one off or if the G2 vehicles are that much more refined. Now to be fair I drove a very lightly used '24 quad R1S that was night and day different. That was priced in the mid 70s and went quick to a sight unseen out of state buyer.

If they are cheaper to manufacture now, and they are selling them for $20K more, it is no wonder they finally are making a profit on these....
Well, it is a for-profit company operating in a capitalistic economy. Plus, it gives them room to pull incentive levers, when they need to. Sustainability.

That pricing kind-of makes sense, its about $7k to go from a Dual performance MAX to Tri, they should have stuck this at like $125K. What's the point of even having the tri motor option now, if you can afford a Tri, you can afford a Quad, and sense most people will lease anyhow the price likely be close. If this is actually the price, I think Rivian messed up

This is not a healthy (or accurate) way of thinking...
And overly optimistic. Until a giant meteor collide with earth, or global nuclear war, tech advancements/changes have no time limits. "Future-proof", like "fool-proof", is folly. Everything invented/made will be obsolete at some point. If "more future-proof than gen 1", and ADAS is important to the individual (not me), then there is more truth to that statement.

I agree with everything you said except Purple is awesome, so therefore I disagree with everything you said.

Purple rules.
Agreed, the purple is awesome. Saw it in person on the mule. Absolutely beautiful.

Hopefully gen 2 has the ability to be upgraded w/ new modules to gen 3... Until that's announced (or not) I'll be holding my gen 2 quad reservation for a bit... and may just roll that $3k deposit into the R2 instead and await a gen3 R1T/S

You can tell gen 1 was supposed to (at the start) have hands free driving (hence early builds had the interior driver camera that was later omitted).

Definitely grinds my gears that Rivian is all about being eco friendly and shit - but here we are - all this e-waste of a vehicle in gen 1 era....

That's a small nitpick in the bucket. I don't loose sleep over it, but a complaint is a complaint.

I wouldn't bet on it though!

Highly unlikely. A car company will not survive if it allows retrofitting instead of selling new cars.

You mean like Tesla? Minus the whole political aspects of it...

Going to disagree on that one.

Depends on how extensive the changes are, obviously. Disagree all you want, but are they [Rivian] offering any upgrade paths from gen 1 to 2 right now? The only way is to sell/trade the car to get newer. Is Tesla offering upgrade paths for pre-Highland?

I recall reading somewhere that the Gen2 compute module was designed specifically to allow for drop-in replacement if a new board was needed. Honestly, Rivian "copies" Tesla enough where I wouldn't be surprised if this was a design criteria for the autonomy module.

1. We're talking about the possibility of Gen2 -> 3. Not 1.
2. Rivian invested a lot of R&D into Gen2 and I see them iterating on that, not replacing it.
3. It makes sense to keep their older (Gen2+) vehicles up to date with optional, purchased hardware upgrades as it brings in additional revenue and they can potentially sell that customer a more advance (more $$$) monthly service (data, self driving, etc...). So again, more revenue.
4. This boldens their eco friendly marketing and strengthens customer loyalty

Yes I know. But we don't even know what Gen 3 entails and how different it will be to Gen 2. Retrofitting can be labor intensive and not worth the cost and resources for OEMs to offer. It's always more profitable to funnel people into new cars. Plus, quarterly reports track production/deliveries (so does Wall St.), not retrofits. I work in the car business.
