I took my R1T to the SLC, UT service center about 3 weeks ago for myriad things. Mainly for realignment of the gear tunnel doors that weren't opening until the 3rd or 4th attempt. But also for a tire rotation, a clunking noise I'd heard a couple of times, etc.

I'd had an excellent, extremely thorough call with one of the national reps prior to the SC - 45 mins or so. The gal even wanted to talk to her team about some of my issues and she called me back later that day to ask even more questions as she'd promised.

One thing I'd mentioned was that the heater was struggling to heat the cab when Temps were below 15F. It was in the low 60s in the cab, with it set to HI, and I'd just come to accept that this was going to be a thing with no ICE to provide enough heat and that I'd have to dress warmly when those Temps were expected. Much to my surprise, last week I did my frequent drive from SLC to Bear Lake. Temps were in the single digits and the cab was ROASTING when set to 73F. I had to stop and take off my long sleeve and jacket. Just a T shirt and I started literally sweating. From there, I was keeping it between 69 - 70. At 71, it started to get uncomfortably warm. Kudos to the SLC SC and the rep I spoke with regarding this and all their other fixes!

Before the fix, have you tried recirculation mode? I was curious, but didn't have single digit temps.

Yes. Recirculation mode, ironically, caused the temps in cab to drop about 5 degrees.

I don't understand this, at 73 it gets roasting hot and this is considered a fix? Sounds like they screwed it up the other direction.
Whatever they did, I'll take it.

They just don't want me to complain about the heated steering wheel not being warm enough. :p

As an aside I actually tested the Heated Steering wheel and its gets between 82F and 87F. So warm, but not quite what I want. The heated steering wheel in my Jeep Wrangler is perfect so I'll measure that to see what its at. I imagine its probably 90-95F.

The Rivian A/C Heating system has a mind of its own which seems to revolve around the 71 setting. Last summer in Phoenix the outside temperature was 115 and the A/C started blowing hot air. I had to turn the system off and then back on to get the A/C back. This past winter in Northern Arizona the reverse happened multiple times. Outside air 25 degrees and the heater started blowing cold air. Turn off turn on. Two weeks ago driving from Tucson to Phoenix outside temp 87 degrees. Needed A/C because of glass roof. Turned the system off and back on four times to keep the A/C working. Had the service center look at it during one of the truck’s service repairs. They tried resetting the software but it did not help. $90,000 truck and the HVAC is haunted with no solution in sight. Not looking forward to the summer.

The Rivian HVAC system is about as smart as Alexa.... which isn't saying much!

On the bright side, all the necessary components are in place for a decent system...... Rivian just needs to fix the software.

A/C hasn't been a problem. My heating issues were solved when I turned the backseat heat on and left it. No issues since.

What did they do? ?
Hell if I know, maybe added a flux capacitor and some plutonium?? "88 miles per hour!!", Doc Brown. With the latest OTA, there's a hidden menu item where you can see total jigawatts - not quite 1.21, but close. ;)

Weird quirk I found with the HVAC controls. I often left it set to 72 through the winter (I'm in the Boston area) and it wouldn't get above say low 60s on full auto, I'd check the app to see the actual temp. I noticed as well that the default on full auto was to have the side and floor vents on and the under display vents closed. In this scenario I could not control the vent flow direction, could drag it around on the screen but nothing would actually move. If I simply activated the vent under the display all of sudden I had full control of the flow in all vents and warm air that would bring it to target temp in just a couple minutes.

Now that it is warm this week, AC seems to work just fine

When you guys to recirculate, does the fan noise volume double?

The fan speed appears to stay the same, but it gets so annoyingly loud on recirculate I often turn it off.

This should not be anywhere near this loud when the fan is on 1/7. Sounds like my mini on high (not max).

I haven't noticed this. I've only really used it with the heater (which, ironically, makes the cab temps colder). I'm going to So. Utah next week and it's expected to be in the 80s. So I'll have to see what happens with the A/C in recirculation vs. outside air.
