They probably didn’t even look at it yet. I had one of them drive around with me in my R1T and they said it was normal. I have to drive around with music on to not be annoyed about it.
I would have got a quad if had test driven a dual and heard this.

I wonder if the clutching mechanisms are prematurely failing? I don't recall anyone really complaining about the engagement/disengagement smoothness, yet one key G2 DM improvement was moving control logic to local with drive motors and allowing more rapid speed matching to make the smoother. Without complaints of smoothness, maybe early warranty data suggests it needed to be smoother to prevent premature wear. Just a wild a$$ speculation....

I think it’s just a noisy Bosche dual motor.
gen 2 using in house motor now. No more Bosche. This is what I am reading.
I actually want to just tell Rivian to take my car back. I have 100 miles on my truck. It’s been at the service center for a week - 2 days after I got the truck I dropped it off. It sucks.

Good to know, I am getting mixed reviews here too, and I definitely notice the same thing during my drives both on DM and QM. Coming from Tesla's almost non-existent noise, this and 'ride quality' were the deciding factors for the Gen 2.

Hey, they are fine-tuning some suspension stuff with the next update, but like you said, the noise is inherent to non in-house motors.

Dual motors have always been in house Enduro motors....no Bosch. Bosch is only in the Quads and mine is very quiet at 40k.

OP has dual motors which have always been Enduro in house and from what I have seen on forums noise complaints on the Bosch Quads is pretty non-existent but the in house Duals seem to have some production varience. Some are reported low noise bit some very noisy.

It's hard to say since the recording gain on a mic doesn't really convey the volume in cabin. The motors and inverter definitely whine but I don't really notice or pay attention.

Try reducing the stability control and driving it around. Sport fully locks in the rear motor as well. This causes it to use the rear motor more for Regen. Using both motors may actually be more quiet. It also makes it drive less like a horrible front wheel drive car like when slowing for a turn.

R1S Dual Motor Max Pack
I just took in my R1S Dual Motor Max Pack today which makes a similar noise well decelerating from 30 to 20 mph. After a couple hours at service they told me they need to replace the front drive unit which will be done next week. They said it’s ok to drive around for the next few days.

I got lucky and only had a 3 week wait for service at the Auburn WA location. Bellevue WA was over a 3 month wait.

UPDATE-

got my truck back today. They didn’t wash it as it was covered in thick dirt and charge level at 45% (dropped at 75%)

front drive unit was replaced. Ok. So it should be fine right? NOPE

At slow speed, now there is squeaking / creaking noise 1-5 mph then the normal dual motor noise kicks in.
Regen sound is still there but it isn’t vibrating like before.
I will take this truck back again. Dual motor seem to have inherent issue.
Well at this point, I will continue to seek solutions and perhaps look into lemon law as I am tired of this 3 week old truck with 130 miles

Dual motor was always the Rivian Enduro motor. There was never a dual motor Bosch. When they advertised the gen 2, they made a big deal of all new motors. The reality is that it’s only all new for the quad. The dual remain the same ā€œnewā€ motor aka the Enduro on sale for over a year now.

I have a 2024 DM R1S and it makes no such sound at that level, at any speed.

How did you get them to replace the drive unit? When I asked if the noise was unusual on my 2024 DM R1S two weeks after I got it they said it was.

I didn’t do anything special. I went for a test drive and reproduced the noise. A couple hours later they messaged me saying they had confirmed that the motor needed to be replaced. When I talked to the tech he mentioned they make a recording and send it to one of the drive unit engineers who runs it through some sort of audio processing tool to help diagnose what is going on.
