PaaK - phone as a key - sucks. It's awesome as a backup system, and I like having it. But not as the primary system of entry.

Again, for those complaining about PaaK, please provide the phone and OS version you are using.

I have an iPhone 15.

Paak works fine 80% of the time. 15% there is a significant delay in locking or unlocking where I walk away and wait, wait, wait to make sure it locks.. 5% I ended up having to use another method.

The annoyance out weighs the connivence by a long measure. Also, I do a lot of Mt biking and skiing and hiking. Standing around the trailheads getting ready with the truck locking/unlocking every 15 seconds with my friends going, "dude, what the hell is wrong with your truck", is not fun. Or at my cabin where it locks/unlocks every time I get near it is also annoying.

It is so simple to just carry the FOB and simply push a button and leave the annoyance behind.

Well, I tried the fob for a couple days. Nope, that's a no go for me. I'm back to PAAK because all other options have worse downsides than PAAK.

The fob, somehow, interferes with the connectivity between my Garmin watch and my phone. If the fob is nearby, or is used at any level while I'm wearing the watch it will cause the watch to drop connection to the phone. To recover from that, I have to restart both the phone and the watch. Does it to both my Fenix 6, and my wifes Venue S. Best guess at this point is that the watch and fob use some level of shared commands, so the "disconnect" from the fob turns off the watch or some stupid crap like that.

First world problems right?

SO, got in the truck this morning and PAAK didn't work AGAIN. Had to use the app to let me into the truck, and then had to turn bluetooth on the phone off and on again twice to get the truck to recognize the phone.

This is such a piss poor experience, I can't even put it into words. I'm now actively looking to find a new vehicle. This sucks that bad.

Just by chance, did you turn off the battery optimization for the Rivian app in your phone?

Just checked. It is set as you have shown "unrestricted".

Worked OK at lunchtime today, in the rain, with a guest.

Currently sitting in the truck and it won't find the key card, or the phone. Can't leave the office.

Restarted the phone, hard and soft reset on the truck.

What a complete cluster fuck or a system. This is absurdly bad.

Going to open a ticket in the app, this is so comically bad, it almost has to be a hardware problem.

Definitely, that's way too often... something isn't right with your vehicle I would guess

Well, new app release has completely broken PAAK for me. Hasn't worked since I updated the app yesterday.

I've deleted the key, re added it, uninstalled and re installed the app, paired and removed and repaired and done all the Bluetooth things.

I'm completely out of ideas, and honestly completely effing over this asinine system. Such a cool vehicle having the ownership experience absolutely ruined by such a simple thing as access. I'm now actively recommending people to NOT buy Rivians when they ask me what I think about it; and I honestly hate that.

Being completely broken is actually a plus in terms of getting Rivian to fix whatever is wrong. When things are intermittent, it can be a pain to troubleshoot. Just keep in mind the problems you're having are NOT normal, something is wrong and it's most likely the vehicle given you've had issues with the key card as well.

Sure hope that's the case. I'll be travelling next week for work, the another road trip. Hoping the fob doesn't give out on me while away.

I'll report back whenever I can get service to look at it.

Not to mention the vampire drain the paak contributes to constantly waking the car. I agree it's a terrible system.

My Audi is so simple. Walk up grab the door handle and it unlocks. Same with locking and a key fob you can optionally use. No vampire drain.

I too came from an Audi ('17 Q7) and consider it a master class on passive access to the vehicle. It just worked, was intuitive, and never failed me. The one time it didn't work passively (wrongly installed fob battery) I got right in through the use of a physical key.

I get that PAAK and proximity locking is supposed to be a luxury and a convenience, but the added hassle of constant lock/unlock when walking by at home, or it being delayed while bluetooth pairs itself is just not worth it. I want the truck to not do anything until I touch it, or hit the button on the fob. When I hit the button on the fob it should react quickly and accurately and not be delayed to the point I feel like I have to wonder if it accepted the command or just isn't working again. PAAK and proximity locking is a tech company solution to a problem that was already masterfully solved by legacy automakers.

True, but the legacy automakers are also trying to use PaaK and drivers are experiencing similar issues.

I was locked out of my Mach-e multiple times over the 3.5 years I owned it. The difference is Ford puts a keypad on the door I used to get in. But still could not start the car. Ford lets you start the car by entering an access code in the display if no key is detected and you enter the car. I never could remember the access code because I so rarely used it. So I wrapped a fob in tin foil and hid it in my car so I could still drive the car if PaaK failed. The fob always worked.

I believe Tesla introduced PaaK and took years to get it working right. The legacy car companies are still learning how to get Paak right. I have seen Lucid owners also having problems with PaaK. It is a great idea but very hard to make reliable.

I have owned my Gen2 R1T for 5 weeks and after two OTA updates PaaK stopped working each time. It was an easy fix and happened at home (I just deleted and reinstalled PaaK) so it didn't bother me. Also, I remember my Mach-e experience and so I have more patience than others may have with it.

Besides those two OTA related issues, PaaK has been perfect so far. Maybe too good. It unlocks the truck when I am too far away, IMO. If I can see the truck, it seems to be close enough to unlock it. Like when in a restaurant and I am seated near where I parked. In that case, I just lock it with the app so really no big deal.
