I have an R1T on order, but while I wait my limited research seems to indicate the following issues occur very frequently at or after delivery. What has your experience been? Mileage?

1. Half shaft clanking when accelerating decelerating from/to a stop.

2. Tonneau cover binding, or broken

3. Suspension recalls

4. Panel gaps/alignment issues, similar to or worse than Tesla (which are pretty material)

5. Drive Unit failure.

Thanks for sharing your experiences.

Going on a month, I have had none of the above... Surprisingly no panel gap issues that I can find based upon quite a bit of inspecting.

My father in law got his in R1T in early June. Absolutely loves it. I have driven it pretty extensively including longer trips and off road. None of the above issues other than the tonneau broke early on but it may have been provoked by getting hitched up on a bike handle bar. He brought it in to the Denver SC and they worked on it to make it so the tonneau was permanently closed and said they were working on a fix (didn't want to replace it with something they would have to replace again). He also brought it to the Orlando SC an hour ago and got the recall issue taken care of in 10 minutes without an appointment.

Otherwise none of the issues you mention.

2022 Rivian R1T , 2024 Rivian R1S
1. It is going to happen. Maybe soon... Maybe not... Hopefully Rivian will fix. It is embarrassing and looks (sounds) bad to potential Rivian customers who hear it when they see the Rivian, typically in a parking lot. It makes a bad impression.

2. Will likely happen, but Rivian has acknowledged and working on a fix.

3. Could happen. Has/Is happening currently. Very quick though.

4. My R1T Panel Gaps FAR exceeded my Tesla's. Actually, virtually all my panel gaps are great. One plastic cladding alignment was off, but they fixed that easily. Rear bumper Side gaps can get a little big on many R1Ts, IDK about R1S, but still better than a typical Tesla.

5. Drive Unit Failure. Seems very rare. On par with Tesla.

I don't have mine yet. I've been tracking issues that seem rare but should be assessed and reported to the SC quickly after taking delivery. Here are a couple you missed:

My full checklist for post-delivery inspection is here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1e1oYf0mDcZLJ8ejdgZpEBLJna1naaHIOVyj_ZVnO3xE/edit?usp=drivesdk

I got my truck in May - Vin5791

My truck has been in for service twice.

definitely clanking on shaft but I’m not worried about it. Last service rear right half shaft had a leak and was replaced. I brought it in for suspension issues and that’s What they Found instead.

My tonneau is finicky. Always. Sometimes it works most the time it only closes about 3/4s. Other times it won’t close at all. I clean it all the time. Just waiting for the bigger fix for now.

my front right suspension was completely replaced in first service. It was leaking and the truck was leaning on the front right. Kept happening at second service and they diagnosed it as a bad calibration. Seems to be okay now.

panel gaps haven’t been an issue.

no drive unit issues.

I love this truck so much. It’s new model/growing pains that are well worth it. If only they could make these pirellis more durable. I’ve about killed a set in 5k miles. ?

Re the half shaft clanking and Tonneau cover issues that Rivian acknowledges a fix is in work to cure the design defect - was anyone told when the fix will be implemented? I’m a bit jilted from my vibrating half shafts in my Tesla Model S Plaid. Tesla has recognized the issue and claims a fix will arrive…. For more than 1 1/2 years now. Party line today remains identical to the one they sang back in July 2021.

So, if Rivian is emulating Tesla, these fixes may be a long time coming….

I sold my 2022 Tesla Model S for an Rivian R1T. Overall the fit and finish, along with build quality are superior on the Rivian imo. Customer support from Rivian for me has been much better as well.

1. A common issue.

2. Pretty much everyone will experience this. My tonneau cover works but I wouldn't say for very long based on how it sounds and operates.

3. First one - seems like an easy fix. Didn't seem to impact my new VIN (119XX)

4. Panel gaps/build quality on my Rivian are better than my 2022 Tesla Model S. There are still some issues here and there but very minor in comparison to what I had on the Tesla.

5. This doesn't seem to be very common.

An issue you didn't ask about but should be aware of is that the vehicle pulls to the right for some (many?). Unknown cause and an alignment doesn't seem to fix it. The steering wheel starts to shake at high speeds around 70-80mph. No fix for this currently.

I'm taking my R1T for its first service appointment at the beginning of November.

My advice would be to wait 6 months until the suspension issues/steering issues have been addressed. Assuming this happens, it is a great vehicle, very fun to drive, and is extremely capable and more usable than the Model S was. The R1T's cabin is a bit more quiet at highway speeds as well, surprisingly.

There is a gap in software functionality, but the Rivian's screens are responsive. Rivian is making good progress on catching bugs and the like.

If helpful a few things I like about the Rivian over the Model S include having a 360 degree camera, blind spot monitoring on the mirrors - Rivian may be be working on a camera feed for this - the automatic high beams work like on a traditional car, and there is rear cross traffic alert functionality all very helpful when driving a larger sized vehicle.

I reserved on 2/5/21 and truly hope my configuration is assembled in Q1 of 2023. It gives Rivian more time to iron out the bugs.

Very good point. Maybe I shouldn’t hope to get mine earlier than the EDD of late 2023. Or maybe I should hope the Cybertruck order gets filled first (ordered that on day one). Prefer the a Rivian, however - but not if it still has these annoying mechanical and reliability issues. Even more important as SCs are few and far between. At least there are many Tesla SCs to service all of the likely issues that will come with the Cybertruck is eventually released…

At 500 miles: yes, no, maybe, not really, no.

1. Yes, and it sounds like this is a common problem. I get a 'tock' noise moving into or out of the 10-20 mph range. It doesn't bother me much but I worry that it's a symptom of some other hidden issue.

2. Not yet, but I've only opened/closed it a couple of times.

3. I think I have a front suspension leak (only an issue while parked), going to put in a ticket for it today.

4. Not that I've noticed. There are probably small misalignments contributing to wind noise, but nothing severe.

5. No issues with the drive unit so far.

At 6000 miles my vin 17xx had a front drive unit failure and is currently in the service center. Ironically my tonneau has been fine, loud, but has never broken.
