I don't buy this. It gets thrown around, a lot, but it doesn't have much teeth. If Amazon was calling the shots, then why do we have Spotify in the infotainment and NOT Amazon Music?

My theory: Rivian had to split resources across a LOT of functional areas, and it was more important to launch with A music app rather than ALL The music apps. They had to pick which to start with, and Spotify was a reasonable choice, based on maturity of the service and popularity.

I'm hopeful that Rivian recognizes that this was okay to launch, but now they need to build out the feature set. Apple Music should be their next endeavor in the music space, imo.
When Apple is the main solution your customers are linked to them for all content and media. If Apple suddenly starts charging carmakers for CarPlay, or charging far more, what are you going to do? Put your thumb in your customer’s eyes? If Apple pulls CarPlay when they debut their own vehicle in circa 2025, then what? Essentially you’re giving away the store when you invite Apple into your business. It’s precisely because they do everything so well that end up in trouble.
This line of reasoning doesn’t make sense either. Rivian uses an Android OS for their infotainment system. What if Google decided to increase their licensing fee for Android.

This really boils down to one thing. RJ doesn’t understand the CarPlay technology and how it integrates into a car and has been given incorrect information about it by his director of software. If you listen to RJ’s comments on the subject his two most often used responses are that Rivian wants to own the user experience and wants to be able to iterate quickly with OTA updates. Some how he has been let to believe that if he put CarPlay in his vehicles then he will not be able to update his software.

What he fails to understand is that CarPlay is a technology that you as the OEM can decide how integrally you incorporate into your vehicle. At the most basic level, you provide coordinates on a screen where the iPhone streams its screens to. It’s no more than a glorified Netflix. All computing is done on the phone and the results are streamed to the screen.

Personally I look at CarPlay as a remote control for the phone, it’s a safety thing to me. Do I want to fiddle with a small screen with my 56 year old eyes while I’m driving or have a larger screen to make this a comfortable experience.

I’m saying this as a Rivian shareholder and R1S reservation holder, Rivian needs to add CarPlay and Android Auto for no other reason than the safety of its drivers.

While a self admitted skeptic when Rivian says they want to control the user experience I think it really means control the revenue stream from add ons. By not offering AUX in connectivity, having USB-c connectors which can not be used for inputs and restricting Bluetooth connectivity Rivian is in a pretty good position to do anything they want.

FYI, on your garbled bluetooth issue, I had that also. Calls with my Motorola Edge 2023 model (great phone) sounded like a high pitched android robot, and the other person on the call couldn't really hear me either. It fixed after the latest software update which was good for me, hopefully yours will on the next one or so then too.

I could see them offering it in a pay-to-play update at some point in the future.

So for audio / calls, are you going iPhone -> CP Unit -> FM -> Rivian, or do you flip back to the BT connection?

If it's the former, how's that experience like?

I found a 12v plug under my dash so this may be a weekend pickup for me!
The phone stays connected to the car, so calls are through the car, I believe. Text messages reading via the unit speakers. I use the FM transmitter only when streaming from the iPhone. There is no BT connection between the device and the car, only between the iPhone and the device. The iPhone BT connects to the car also - so two BT connections to the iPhone, the car and the device.

Got it - thanks! I didn’t realize it had speakers itself! That’s probably good enough for podcasts, too.

I don’t suppose it registers as an EV for routing?

Definitely good enough for PODcasts. Not sure about EV routing.

I hear @EV Sportline may be coming out with a premium setup in a couple of months - just a rumor. If so, I will upgrade from my prototype above and will provide a detailed review and comparison.

Has anyone tried the new RoadTop 8.9" unit? Thinner bezel, finer screen resolution and maybe improved Bluetooth?
I tried it and the same choppy BT connection is present. I also didn't like the placement below the center screen because it is obscured by drinks placed in cupholders.

After scrolling through all of the center screen menus I think a phone mounted in the middle of the screen will get the job done for me. There are a couple of seldom used pages on the screen that use the middle area and for those I will just flip up the phone.

This is ridiculous that we are dealing with this because Rivian "CAN provide a better experience than AA/CP". Maybe Rivian "CAN" but they sure DON'T. What good does it do if in 5 years they have developed their software enough achieve the "CAN"? I will already be driving a different vehicle.

I want screen projection, too, but I don’t think it’s fair to say, “This is ridiculous that we are dealing with this because Rivian…” when we made the choice to buy the vehicle KNOWING there was no screen projection offered or on the roadmap.

There are many times I’ve been annoyed by the lack of CarPlay, but I know that I could have prevented that annoyance by not buying a Rivian. If I had it to do over again, I’d still buy the Rivian because the rest of the vehicle is fantastic.

I keep hoping that Rivian will fix the nav vehicle marker continuing after the vehicle stops bug and add texting support. These are my two biggest pain points which screen projection would address instantly. The OTA update improvements I’ve seen from Rivian give me hope that they will get there.

Did you try connecting the bluetooth directly to the rivian while also using the carplay instead of proxying through the carplay unit? I do this and do not have choppy audio. I have not seen a downside and I use carplay every drive.
