I have been having the exact same problem. It makes the navigation useless. Even after I get on 66 it tries to route me as if I am not on the road. Argh.
Yes, that’s exactly what happens to me.

Driving south from Seattle yesterday, we were using the Rivian Navigator (mostly to track estimated range at arrival) and took the HOV lanes of I-5 South toward Olympia.

Near the interchange with I-405 at Tukwila/Renton, the HOV lane diverges from the non-HOV lanes by what I think is a few hundred feet.

Rivian Nav started repeatedly barking nonsensical orders such as, "Go south on I-405 North," because nobody's ever programmed the Nav to recognize the southbound HOV lanes for what they are. This continued nonstop until the HOV lanes rejoined the non-HOV lanes south of the interchange.

Finally my wife (who was driving) said, "Shut up, lady" (referring to the Nav) and I ended the route. Fortunately, we didn't need the nav to find our way!

***

Given time and feedback, Rivian Nav could become a competitor to Apple Maps and Google Maps.

We would like to provide the Nav developers with specific feedback about the often-confusing directions Rivian Nav gives us. But we don't know how.

So we endure the stupid stuff, reminding ourselves how much we love our Rivian in other ways, and hope they figure it out somehow, sometime.

Best wishes!

Have we figured out the solution? I took 495 and 66 toll roads (northern Virginia) even though Rivian wanted me to take the regular lanes. It went crazy recalculating how to get back on the normal lanes. It does not recognize the toll roads. I do not have the avoid toll roads selected. Four trips. The same thing happened.

For me, it seems random—sometimes it works normally, and other times it’s completely erratic. When that happens, I stop using it and switch to Waze on my phone.

I think it is a time of day/traffic thing in the algorithm.
I think it is actually reading traffic data.

I’ve had my navigation several times suggest a reroute in the middle of a trip to save time.

Best example was in Tucson March 5th heading East on I10, suggested a reroute to save 30 minutes. At the time I did not know why but accepted the suggestion. It turned out that there was an accident blocking a portion of the freeway, it routed me on side streets and put me back on the freeway just after the blockage.

Just to be clear, the times I refer to I was driving in the gov lanes which were almost e
Empty, while the main lanes were packed with traffic. Particularly when on 495-Beltway. The navigation was going bananas recalculating routes to get me out of the hov. The hov was very clearly the best option. I do not have the avoid toll lanes on neither by default nor for these rides. This behaviour is very odd.

I will say again that I’ve had issues with other map apps in the region (between the Beltway and Manassas), where the app goes bonkers. It thinks I’m on 29, or a neighborhood, or a parking lot, and is tying to get me to an on-ramp to get back onto 66. And those times I wasn’t even in the HOT lanes.

My wife and I always joke that it’s the NRA building that’s jamming signals (for those that don’t know the area, the NRA headquarters overlooks I-66 in Fairfax, VA).
