If you live in a stupid state, make sure you understand the process BEFORE you start an order

Had to do that in GA, although not on a lease.

I don't think the SC have the capability to verify checks or even take them (or cash), although credit cards taken fine for parts/accessories.

Just another symptom of the "not really a dealership" Rivian sales model.
best answer. And they won't take more than the initial $1k on a cc so it has to be transfer or check for the balance.

Yeah. I paid for my whole Tesla before ever seeing it when I lived in Texas. Thats how it goes in those crazy states.

some of the guides are horrible. I had to refuse a R1S this past Friday due to some bad issues with it. So, had to basically start from scratch being rematched with a new VIN. The lady I'm dealing with in Sales Support is horrible. Tells you that she will do something and NEVER follows through.
Sorry to hear that. Hope you end up with what you wanted.

What's wrong with using Plaid to pull directly from your account?
Some, possibly many, financial institutions don't support Plaid. My credit union was one, so I had them do a wire transfer, for which they charged $25.

I must be in the minority, in that I didn’t mind doing this. Had the bank send a scan of the check and tracking info to Rivian the day before pickup. Did the same for a Model Y a few months later. I agree it’s not ideal, but didn’t find it odd.
With that said, it’s a shame that these practices may be causing buyers to shy away and understand the need for more transparent purchasing instructions.

It consistently boggles my mind that some of the most ostensibly "business friendly" states in the country have the most restrictive anti-consumer laws regarding car purchasing.
"Business friendly" is by definition anti-consumer in many ways. When you let businesses buy the legislatures and write the rules, the consumer tends to be on the losing end of things. It's mind boggling to me that this is surprising to people.

Leasing Tesla Model 3 until Rivian R3X comes out.
Sorry - gotta rant for a bit.

I'm guessing this is posted elsewhere, but I couldn't find it, so I wanted to post a warning for people that live in stupid states (Alabama in my case).

Since Alabama sucks on the dealership lobbyist teat, I just found out that I must prepay my up front lease costs before I ever see/drive my new R1S. What is really the icing on the cake is that Rivian didn't bother to tell me this until the very end of the order process. I am now rethinking my Rivian purchase and may eat the $1,000. They want a few thousand dollars with a "trust me, we'll deliver your vehicle" click on a web site. While I put most of the blame on my stupid state, I still put some on Rivian, since they could have provided me with a BUNCH of information when I first created my account, which included telling them my address.

I have to eiither let Rivian pull the money directly out of my bank account (OH HECK NO), wire them the money (which costs me MORE money), or upload an image of a certified check and send the check with tracking (and provide the tracking info to Rivian). All of this seemingly before I can schedule delivery. And if you read the payment terms, you get to the "Except as otherwise set forth in these Payment Terms, all Transactions are non-refundable and non-reversible" wording.

Dude, this sucks. The dealership model needs to @&$# right off. They’re all part of the myriad of scams that are baked into our country from the housing market and internet service, to college tuition/student loans and streaming services.

Rivian should have been more up front with you, but I bet the right hand doesn’t know what the left hand is doing. I wonder if you can lease something in another state, take delivery, and then sort out all of the taxes and whatnot later? Probably too late at this point.

I’m originally from WV, but I purchased my last vehicle in Pennsylvania because the WV dealerships wouldn’t deal with me via email only. I just wanted the final price in writing, so they couldn’t bait and switch me or add a bunch of ridiculous fees. It all worked out in the end.

You would think that direct sales would resolve all of this by making things more upfront and transparent. It’s definitely frustrating.

Same here. No MCO needed for self-registration for pickup in a few days. The state DMV needs MCO or title and the latter is issued at delivery. Rivian would not even send a title application and is supposed to mail MCO. Guide is non-responsive

When I bought mine a year ago in CA, Delivery was scheduled, and then Rivian needed payment 2-days before then so they would have time for their systems to sync before delivery. This seems to be standard Rivian procedure - pay for it or secure financing before delivery.
