Recently got my new adapter for Tesla charging. The first time I pulled into the Tesla charger I plugged The Tesla cable to my adapter to the car, and it immediately started charging on my Rivian account. When I tried to use the Tesla app to activate the charger on the second time for charging, I could never get it to connect. Should I not use the Tesla app? Has anyone had this issue? Should I be plugging it in and waiting for the Tesla to bill me through Rivian? Thanks for any help

Locations? Just in case, not all SC are open, assuming you know this.

I tried quite a few on a recent road trip and all worked, some throttled the speed a little but no major issues.

If you’re not attempting to use the Tesla charging membership for the discounted rate, there isn’t really a need to use the Tesla app. If you’re going with the non-discounted rate, just use the plug-and-charge feature and let Rivian handle the billing.

I went to the same superchargers on my return trip and I had problems with connection. That’s why I was asking the question? I think maybe I just needed to plug it in and let Rivian do the billing and not use the Tesla app

My name is Mike, and I have a (car) problem
Rivian supports Plug and Charge. Unless you have a Tesla monthly subscription (which will lower the per-kWh price) then there's no need to use the Tesla app.

It's possible that attempting to initiate the charge from the app in the absence of a subscription borked the session.

Thank you I think that’s what happened. I appreciate the advice.

Either way should work. The billing is different of course so if you don't have a billing CC on the Tesla account it will not go through of course. Rivian is just super easy with plug and charge.

I have the Tesla membership though so I always activate and get billed through the Tesla app. If you plan to use Tesla frequently then I highly recommend the membership. It pays for itself with savings if you use it several times a month.

Only two reasons to initiate session with Tesla app:
1. Plug and charge failed and you need a backup option to try.
2. You have enrolled in Tesla’s monthly subscription, for the lower per kW pricing.

Things to commit to memory:
1. Only select Superchargers are open to Rivians. These are the ones you can see in your Rivian’s nav and in your Rivian mobile app.
2. Make sure the NACS plug and your adapter are fully inserted and locked. Listen for the click. Pull to confirm lock.
3. Regardless which method to initiate session, be patient. Don’t assume the handshake to be immediate. Give it time to go through the paces and read everything (instructions, prompts, etc.). Don’t be quick to assume things have gone awry, especially if there are no notifications of failure.
4. It doesn’t matter whether you put NACS plug in adapter first, then the whole assembly into charge port… or if you install adapter first (without NACS plug). The latter may be easier. Tolerances are snug. Slow and tentative is not the way to insure proper insertion. Line things up then send it like you mean it.

I’ve used the Tesla network ~15 times with my Rivian, most with the original A2Z and a couple with the Rivian official adapter.

I had one issue a few months ago when the internet was down on our vehicles, it would not plug and charge. I started that session from my phone using the Tesla app, oddly enough it still charged through Rivian (I’m not paying the monthly subscription).

Other issue was in Foxborrough, MA, it was a Magic Dock station, tried 2 different stalls with my adapter, the Magic Dock adapter, plug and charge and Tesla app. Vehicle was stuck at starting to charge but never started no matter which option I used. Ended up going to an EA station a couple of miles away. It was the 4th attempt to use SC on that trip, the 3 stations before and 3 stations after all worked fine.

Sometimes it is just that location acting up. I’d try another location just to verify it is not an account issue you are having.

I just replied to another post where another Rivian owner had the same issue. I’ve run into this the last two times at a Tesla supercharger, however, both times were resolved right away by unplugging the charger and adapter and redoing the charging session at the same stall. Hope this works for you!

I have done 2 Tesla adapter plug n pay sessions. Both worked fine, but paid .58 cents per Kwh. I got 480 MPH at first, then it dropped to 420 MPH after 15 Min. I will not likely need a monthly charge at a Tesla charger so costs but works.
