A post a few days ago about the plugging order of your adapter. If you plug it in one way you will be charged through Tesla. The other way through Rivian.

TIA

Just plug it in and Rivian charges you. If you use the Tesla app to start a session before plugging it in, Tesla charges you.

I just plug mine in and never bothered getting another app. Never had any issues.

If you have a Tesla supercharger membership (available for non-Tesla Supercharger users) my understanding is that you'll pay whatever the Tesla rate is (presumably lower), otherwise you pay an upcharge if you initiate the charge through the Tesla app.

As our pisano Goggles said, unless you plan on supercharging a lot on a long road trip or on a regular basis, it may or may not be worth signing up for the membership.

Tesla bills non-Tesla customers at higher rate than what they charge Tesla owners.

Two ways to Superharge a non-Tesla:
  1. Plug and charge means exactly what it says. If working as designed, no need to do anything else to initiate charge. Plug and charge is billed to the payment card you have associated with your Rivian account. You are billed at the higher non-Tesla rate mentioned above.
  2. Tesla membership, $12.99/mo, gives you a ~20% discount on that higher rate. If you have a membership and want to be billed at the discounted rate, you must initiate with the Tesla app before you plug it in. You can however have only the adapter in the charge port first. Rough math says after 100-150 kWh a month, you break even on that membership fee.

Download and open the Tesla app. Create a non-Tesla account. You do not need to have payment card on file to open an account. Then, pick a location that is open to non-Teslas to see what the rates are, at that specific location, for any 24-hour period. With and without membership, expect a spread between around 25¢ to 70¢ per kWh.

From what I have seen in Orange County, CA, Tesla Non-membership rates are on par with EA Pass+ membership ($7/mo). Other regions may be different, since prices are not uniform/universal from coast-to-coast. Prices are influenced by the local utility that powers each site, as well as the actual property lease each of the charging networks pay to the property owner.
