Hi guys, I'm hoping you can help me out here. I just got my R1T last month!

I am in and out of my truck a lot of the day while at home and always keep my truck unlocked in my driveway, that is, until night time. I also don't lock my truck for quick run in/out stops like dropping off packages and whatnot.

The problem is that the door handles stick out, which is a huge invitation for car fishers and other clepto-types, it almost screams "come grab ahold of me and see what's inside!" Anyone who's had a theft or two knows what I mean.

How can I get the Rivian to keep those door handles CLOSED like my Teslas so that I don't get ripped off? I get it's a huge visual tell in public when its unlocked--so yeah, you should lock it--but let's be honest, we all forget from time to time to lock our vehicles because you are loading or unloading items or dealing with kids; regardless it's not something I want to advertise.

I also really want this.

Carwash mode makes the door handles work the way we want them to, so it is not a hardware limitation. Rivian just needs to add a setting to enable it in other contexts.

PAAK should solve for this...auto lock when you walk away, auto unlock when you walk up.

There would be no way to have handles in and be unlocked (which is a good thing).

How do you open the door from the outside in car wash mode?

In carwash mode, the door handles work exactly like Model 3 door handles. Pushing on the front of the handle causes the back of the handle to pivot out. Then pull on the back of the handle to open the door.

I find it locks pretty quickly when I walk away from it. Usually while I'm still within 10-15 feet (PAAK). If someone walked right up behind me and tried to get it I would likely notice that (I hope). Are you close enough when in your house or a store that it remains unlocked?

For me (and I think the OP) this issue is not how quickly it auto-locks. We have auto-lock disabled because sometimes we don't want the doors locked. The options for when to not auto-lock the doors cover my desired use case. But then the door handles stay extended 100% of the time which is not ideal.

For example when parked inside my garage, I don't want the doors locked. There is no benefit to locking the doors when the car is in a locked garage, and I don't want to have to go hunt down a key every time I go back into the garage to get something out of the car. But I also don't want the door handles extended all the time because I bump into them when I am walking around the garage not trying to get into the car.

I think the ideal solution would be an option to add a timer to the door handles that was independent of the locks. Close the door handles even if the doors are still unlocked after a short bit of time has elapsed without any use.

Carwash mode proves the handles can work this way. It is just a matter of Rivian's software engineers adding settings for it.

Got it. Thanks for the additional explanation. Agree it should be an option for sure.

There's another issue with the automatic lock/unlock outside of home.

When we park our car at Airbnb/friend's house/playground, etc., the car sometimes unlocks itself (hence telling strangers that doors are unlocked) because our phone gets close enough to the car (even we may be inside the house for example). It's such a hassle to remember disabling auto unlock in these cases.

Therefore, the best solution is to give us the option to only unlock the car when the door handles are pushed like in car wash mode.

That makes sense. I haven't experienced that yet. In fact if I walk up to the truck with my phone in my back pocket instead of a front pocket, it often won't unlock for me while I'm standing right next to the driver's door. I'm fine with that but I would probably share your concerns if it was more sensitive. I hope they do offer that as a setting in the future.

YES! Car wash mode behavior is exactly what I want as far as the door handles are concerned, and it can be done.

So I found that setting and I turned it on just now in my driveway, thus enabling me to run and get items from the truck after a trip to the hardware store or whatnot as I go back and forth into my truck throughout the day. I did, however, see from a video somewhere online that car wash mode times out after a while. To verify this I am testing it out, and will report back. I can see my truck from my home office so I will check every few minutes.

I'm not one of those guys that has an iPhone surgically attached to my person, so PAAK is not an option. I don't even bring my phone with me when driving. Manufacturers that don't get this will be missing out, old folks and tech drop outs like myself don't want to wander around all day with a digial leash.

It would be SUPER nice to have this behavior as an option by default (where the door handles act like a TESLA) instead of having to go into the vehicle settings once arriving to your location and then enabling car wash mode.

I think you mean, where door handles act like a Model 3 or a Model Y, because the S sticks out when it's unlocked, and the X I think only has capacitive door handles, not an actual handle...

How do you open the door from the outside in car wash mode?
With an open hand, push your pointer finger in the divot, which pivots the handle into your palm. Clasp the rest of the handle with your remaining fingers and pull away. It's basically a single motion if you practice it.

Here's a video of my process but the vehicle wasn't actually unlocked at the time. My gesticulating snark is because I made it as a response to folks saying you can't do it with only a single hand.

i think this is useful. they can do similar thing so that you can have an "at home" and "everywhere "else" option like GG. so at home you could set it to have the door handles flush but unlocked and everywhere else it would be presented so you know its unlocked

I think this whole issue is largely the result of Rivian breaking with the legacy model of allowing people to have something or somewhere to touch on the car which allows the vehicle to unlock if the fob/phone is present AND THE DRIVER INSTRUCTS THE VEHICLE TO OPEN BY TOUCHING OR PUSHING SOMETHING. I understand wanting to do things differently, and even saving money by omitting capacitive sensors in handles or physical buttons, but this isn’t working as many people want and expect.

So, maybe Rivian can use the existing hardware to emulate the behavior so many of us want: unlock only when a fob is close by AND I do something to indicate that unlocking is desired. I’ve seen a system used by some car dealerships where the salesperson has to have a fob or something and then they tap on the car twice to get it to unlock. I’m not sure about the specifics. If the microphone in the vehicle could be used for this type of behavior then it wouldn’t be as good as simply touching something on the handle, but it would be much better than what we have now for those of us who want more control over when the vehicle unlocks. If you have a proximity-enabled fob or PAAK and you approach the vehicle it wakes up and then starts listening. If you do a tap tap on the window it unlocks and presents the handles. When finished with a drive, maybe tapping 3 times tells it to lock.

Just a thought...
