You can still do hands free. I use Siri to read, compose, and send messages when on my trips. Works great, plays over the Rivian speakers and I do not have to take my eyes off the road to read the text on the screen.

I actually use Siri in the Tesla as well to read and send them but I do like getting the message alert in the Tesla, just have it read as opposed to reading it.
You can’t initiate a text through Siri when the phone is locked. So you have to pick up your phone and look at it to unlock it. It’s not really hands free. If it wasn’t for that, this would be perfectly usable to me.

Actually, you can summon Siri when the phone is locked and send a text, without picking up the phone. Go to Settings>Siri>Allow Siri When Locked. In fact, you can even send an audio message. Just ask Siri to send an audio message.

I checked and had that switched on, but I swear it would never let me do it. I’ll try again this week. If that worked, I don’t care about built in texting for the vehicle. I don’t need to see it. Just the ability to do it by voice.

Also check the “hey, Siri” option. I am able to do this as well

Thanks. I hope I’m just missing something. I’ve tried this for years including in my former Tesla before voice texting was added to the car. Maybe I’m remembering wrong and the issue is if you ask it to read your messages? There was only one thing that didn’t work, but it was important. I’d ask to read the messages and then reply. The initial read (I think) wouldn’t work when locked. And I checked already that I have the setting on to use when unlocked. But I’ll double check that this week.

PRO TIP:

For all of you complaining about "too many updates", if you hurry, I'm sure you'll be able to find someone who bought a Fisker who's willing to trade with you (straight up) for any Rivian that's free of body damage.

I’ve checked all the correct boxes and Siri always wants me to unlock first also. Its not just you.

You’re correct about the read messages. It will ask to unlock for that. As for composing, you can “hey siri” that

Oh god no, please don’t make my car better AGAIN!
There is a chance they won’t. Every update fixes some bugs, but occasionally introduces new ones. And there was that time that they had the wrong cert and bricked the infotainment. Rivian’s talent pool isn’t good enough for me to be completely comfortable with any update. Simpler is better, in my opinion.

You do you, boo.

For me, keep those free uogrades coming! I will take the occasional glitch in stride. Show me another car company that equals their accomplishments at this stage in their development?

I feel like I'm the only one who doesn't want my texts displayed on the screen. I'd rather focus on driving and being out in the world instead of glued to yet another screen. Why would it be that important to read, or respond, or always be "connected" while driving? If it's truly an emergency, don't text me... IDK, how about picking up the phone and calling me instead?
My Ford shows me I have a text and then reads it to me. That's the way I like it.

As soon as I saw the post from @Wayne this song popped into my mind. Thanks, you made me happy seeing this as the very next post!
