If you hit the brakes do you immediately get ABS activation? Could be an ABS sensor issue.

Even on pure ice I've never experienced what you have.
never got going over 2mp so hard to slam on the brakes. I called service and they had me do a reset, followed by allowing it to sleep for 1 hours, followed by they said it needed a tow and service. Didn't seem like they had any idea what was going on.

What was the battery temperature in the gauge view? Sounds like it started up in turtle mode which vastly limits power and driving speed.
didn't see the battery temp. I will go check that. it is in the turtle mode, but service could not explain to me what that was or how to turn it off. I called service and they had me do a reset, followed by allowing it to sleep for 1 hours, followed by they said it needed a tow and service. Didn't seem like they had any idea what was going on.

Did you try turning stability control off? I'd be curious if it would allow slip then and if it is an issue with an ABS sensor.
I turned that off and took it out of snow mode. couldn't get it to change anything. I called service and they had me do a reset, followed by allowing it to sleep for 1 hours, followed by they said it needed a tow and service. Didn't seem like they had any idea what was going on.

Yeah if turtle was on you’ve got an issue.

The statement that surprises me a little is “car to depend on in poor conditions”. I just don’t think a brand new car company with a brand new model as an EV in winter conditions should be awarded that statement, as much as I’d like Rivian to be in a solid place where such statements would be warranted.

I do sympathize with the pain of having a new car with issues though.
What else would you recommend I call our one 4-wheel drive vehicle that will hold all 7 of our family when it snows? The kids don't like riding in the back of the pickup when it is 4 degrees and the mini-cooper has gotten a little tight.

Gotta love the "HELP NOTHING WORKS" posts with no photos... Even Rivian requires photos when submitting tickets, so folks, please include photos of your problems!

Battery, drive mode, and most importantly show us the dash errors popping up. This sounds like turtle mode, totally unrelated to the weather.
It is in turtle mode. I described that to the tech on the phone and they had no understanding what I was saying. First thing I did was call Rivian. I called service and they had me do a reset, followed by allowing it to sleep for 1 hours, followed by they said it needed a tow and service. Didn't seem like they had any idea what was going on.

Also strike me strange the high numbers of frantic posts looking to strangers on internet for help, instead of going to Support first, then internet to compare notes or share lessons learned. Almost like calling random strangers across state lines when house is on fire, instead of local 911. Illogical. Too easy to dismiss as attempts to torpedo Rivian’s reputation.
Weird because I haven't felt like the people on this site were strangers. We are a small group of people on a new journey together. I think that was the purpose of a forum. I called service and they had me do a reset, followed by allowing it to sleep for 1 hours, followed by they said it needed a tow and service. Didn't seem like they had any idea what was going on. So I thought the next best thing would be to post on the Rivian forum site. Seemed like better than just jumping on the internet. Why would someone who just waiting almost 3 years and pay that kind of money be interested in "torpedoing" Rivian's reputation? Thanks for taking the time to read a strangers post.

I do feel for you. That sure sucks and is a tough problem. I just think that Toyota, Honda, Nissan et cetera are the type of brands you buy when you’re looking for reliability and boredom. And if it’s about the AWD/4WD for safety reasons in winter conditions, there are a few other 7-seater options (arguably very few).

Maybe it’s just me, but when I bought my Rivian I was 100% clear in my mind that I’m buying into a fascinating experiment of the automotive industry. Not for one moment did I dare to wonder whether I want it for reliability too. Of course: “Lots of money yadda yadda. Should expect reliability at that price yadda yadda.” - but if I thought like that, the Rivian wasn’t the right vehicle to buy. Add to it the winter troubles of EVs and the thought to haul around 7 people reliably becomes very disencouraging.

On the bright side though, I’m sure Rivian will make it right for you and that after this initial disaster, you will find increasing reliability over time with your vehicle due to software updates et cetera. For now though, you’re in for a rough ride through the Rivian Servicing woes.

On a side note, as you can see in my signature, I can highly recommend the 7-seater BMW. When equipped with proper Nokkian or Blizzak winter equipment, it does a tremendous job in treacherous conditions.

Not sure why folks are responding as they are. Your questions seem legit and this is the place for them. Sorry you haven't gotten much help from rivian or here, that sucks. Good luck and I hope things turn positive soon!

Yeah, I don't see anything temperature related that should be causing a lack of performance /turtle mode. Seems to be some other issue causing it. If you check the notifications (bell at the top corner of the main screen) what is the explanation for turtle mode?

? I'm sorry your having this experience in what should be a fun frolic in the snow!

Your in limp (turtle) mode. Unfortunately if resets don't fix you need service.

The good news is that service will get it fixed up for you.

Mine has been a beast in the snow, by far the best "snow" vehicle I have ever had.

Hope you can get it going and post some pics when you get a chance. I agree with the posts above in that it sounds like a traction control or abs thing.
Second.

UPDATE from Rivian
“It looks like a faulty halfshaft backed out of the drive unit. The drive unit is not damaged and we have a halfshaft on order to be here later this week.”
