This morning I was accelerating onto the highway (in all-purpose mode) and all the sudden I heard a thud from the rear of the vehicle, and the turtle icon plus a message about ‘needs servicing’ and ‘reduced performance’ popped up. It was stuck in all-purpose mode, and wouldnt allow me to raise or lower the suspension. I put in a service ticket (Denver location), but its almost two months out. So, I did a soft and hard reset and it now allows me to put the car in different drive modes, and the turtle icon is gone, but the performance is limited. The acceleration gauge indicators (the bars that grow when you step on the pedal) are now stuck yellow. The regen seems to work ok. Btw, R1S, performance dual motor with max pack, delivered right after Christmas 2023, and has 7900 miles on it. Its been into service once before for the AC, which wasnt working in temps over 90 degrees F…. they found the refrigerant level was low.
Appreciate any thoughts or similar stories…. I’ve got plenty of time to wait apparently!

Have they called you about your ticket? They usually call within a day or two to better understand any issues in the ticket and ask questions. They'll also have mobile service and additional appointments at your SC you won't be able to see. Let us know what happens when they call(ed).

Are you sure it’s still performance limited? The acceleration is yellow now.

Rear drive unit failure. Either the axle disconnect or the actual drive unit. Call Rivian and tell them the vehicle is undrivable.

Well, after a long wait, I finally got into service and they said the rear drive speed sensor lost calibration momentarily, but my rear drive looks strong as an ox. So they flashed the sensor, and sent me on my way (after rotating my tires for $60). Haven't had an issues since... consider myself fortunate.

Happened to me yesterday too. Coasted up to a stoplight and it turned green so I accelerated lightly (30mph road). Felt a weird clunk like when a locking dif doesn't engage right. Went into turtle mode and rear motor disabled. Rivian was great about it and sent a rollback an hour later to pick it up to take a look. Error disappeared after a restart but I'll let them look and maybe also see about the jounce lines. Poor tow driver had never seen a Rivian. I gave him instructions but it shifted into park on him no less than 4 times trying to load it and see where he was going.

Just curious if anyone else has had this issue.

It happened to me on a drive back home on the highway from a camping trip last night, in a 2024 Gen 1 R1S. I had it in ACC, at about 80 MPH, and then heard a clunk, and the turtle mode icon and the one with the 4 wheels showed up. It was unnerving, and I half-expected that the vehicle was going to leave me stranded 90 miles from home, in the middle of the desert.

Was a little curious if using the off-road mode, and self-leveling might have done something.

Driving for 1.5 hours without any cruise control was a little tiring after a long day, but at least I got home ok.

Today, after doing software and vehicle resets, the problem still persists. Luckily, I can still drive highway speeds, but only having the front motor is annoying, but better than an undrivable vehicle.

Unfortunately, the mobile service appointment that I could get (6 hours from the closest SC) is 4 weeks away. Hopefully no other issues pop up between now and then.

I had a rear motor failure with my Gen2 R1S at under 4,000 miles. Part clunk then the feeling of going over a rumble strip. They should prioritize you for service. In my case, they sent a flatbed pronto and didn’t want me to drive it.

Mine was fixed (replaced) within about a week. (And they took care of the smaller issues for an upcoming appointment I had.) My R1S has been great since.

Good luck!

Thank you!

It didn’t quite feel like a rumble strip and felt more like the rear motor just stopped working.

But I will bug them for an earlier appointment because it just doesn’t give me a great feeling that I can continue driving for weeks before it gets serviced.

Wow, sorry to hear that. Glad you got home ok and it is still somewhat usable.

Maybe it is a new SW feature for improved efficiency. /s

I am in your camp on this. While I love my Rivian, I am not oblivious to the issues out there. Hence, the reason I bought an extended warranty when I finally decided I was in it for the long haul. I'll probably own it long after the bumper-to-bumper warranty is in effect. I realize the powertrain on my quad would still be covered but I am more worried about the suspension and other things at this point.

I’m actually more worried about the suspension costs out of warranty. So many leaks and such….

That was my thought more than once while driving around town today. It was like driving in chill mode and I really had to step harder on the accelerator to keep up with traffic. Or maybe driving in conserve mode all the time?
