Is there a reason the tonneau cover needs the locking mechanism on the last panel? The only advantage I can think of is securing the panels if you wanted to drive with the tailgate down.

My tonneau cover latch broke during a service visit. I assume the technician pulled too hard and the string snapped off on the left side. Rivian mailed me a new panel, so it wasn’t a big deal. If it happens again I would be tempted to just remove the two spring loaded latches in order to simplify removing the last panel.

I lost a cotter pin on the latch, replaced it with one from the hardware store. I don’t think the lock is really that necessary if you keep the tailgate up.

I’d agree. It’s only needed if you had the tailgate down

Interesting. I never thought about the redundancy of that latch, under normal circumstances. I can’t imagine a scenario where I would be driving with the tonneau on and the tailgate down. However, one might have a need to leave one of the panels out, moving the whole assembly forward, latching it into place, leaving access at the back, with the tailgate up. Whew! Was that a run on sentence? As an example, one might need access to a fridge or something.

If it locks in place then you know it’s secure and you can close the tailgate without jamming the cover. My thoughts on this.

The panels are a set of 4, however the latched end one can book end and lock into position as a single panel against the cab, or hold others in place against the cab.

Mansplaining, and tired so forgive me. But, there are 4 notches in the bed rails for it to lock into. Say you have something too tall to fit under the cover, you can omit any of the initial 3 panels and still lock them together in position so they can't shift
