On the way to breakfast last Sunday I got a brief message that there was a motor failure and that performance would be degraded. Acceleration was severely degraded and top speed was around 40mph. Display indicated that rear motors were not working. I considered what to do during breakfast and decided to do a hard reset. After breakfast, the R1T ran just fine and has since. I know it's a rolling computer, but I'm wondering what happened and why it reset itself with no intervention by me? Never did the reset. In nearly 2 years of ownership, I've never done a hard reset and never have had a serious problem.

The top reason that comes to mind for me is a sensor that may be starting to go bad. I would call service about it if for no other reason than to simply document. Maybe get an appointment scheduled if you are concerned.

Do you have gear guard turned off? If so, after a number of minutes in Park it will effectively do a "soft" shutdown.

I had some issues with DC fast charging that resolved themselves (per recommended by rivian support) by allowing the truck to sleep. (Something like 20 minutes if I recall). Later I learned that a soft reset would have also fixed it (but support surprisingly didn't offer that as a solution).

In the future if it happens again, if you long hold hazard it will capture logs (note the date/time) without a reset and then you can call support to have them look at the logs.

No Gear Guard was on. I do appreciate the tip on storing the logs. Thanks

how do you charge your car?

(I know it's a weird question, but humor me)

Contact support and provide time/date of error so they can look for it in data logs. Next time, as it happens, long press of your name on center display or hazard button will flag and capture data to make troubleshooting easier. Beyond this no one can tell much more. Just like faults in ICE cars, some are temporary anomalies, while others are permanent.

In had the exact same issue. Car had been plugged in at home for a week while I was on vacation and an update came in. Did a hard reset and been fine since.

This happens occasionally with Dual motors... usually at highway speeds when you hit the accelerator suddenly. It has happened to me twice since I have owned my car. Hard reset fixes it.

The first time, I opened a ticket. They said it was only a problem if it happens often and/or not solved by a reset.

I think they said it had something to do with the clutch disconnect on the rear axle.

THe good thing with doing a hard reset is that you pressed the emergency button. Everytime you do that, the truck will log the truck data into and you can call into the service department and tell the day and time and they can see all the data and that will help.

Definately call the service department and let them know. That way you will have a record of the issue.

It could be a one time glitch that's resolved. However, I had a possibly similar issue upon delivery and had to have a motor replaced (it's been fine since). If you really want to test it, turn off Gear Guard and let the car go to sleep (i.e., do not access it locally and do not open your app for ~ 60 minutes minimum). Then, return to the car and try to use it. If the error returns, then I would suggest you probably have a serious problem.

Here was my experience if you're interested:

At what amperage or kWh? And do you park outside or inside?
kW = power as in rate of charge or motor power (horsepower)

kWh = energy as in stored energy in a battery pack or units of energy purchased

They are not interchangeable units.
