The title is Navigation Zoom Preferences… as in there are none.

There continues to be no way a user can prevent the navigation system from automatically zooming in, which always seems to occur at precisely the wrong time. This is usually at an interchange when I need to see the next turn that is coming up and it zooms in just enough to remove this detail from view. As designed this is an annoying distraction at best, and a safety hazard at worst. I find the Rivian navigation unusable for routes in suburban areas and revert to using Google maps on my phone on my lap (and wishing Car Play was supported to put this on the screen as a safer option).

PLEASE fix this horrible “feature” and give the user more control over the map zooming.

Your topic sent me down an interesting rabbit hole of the various methodologies and algorithms in place across manufacturers and providers. Here are some examples (help from ChatGPT):

Summary of Methods

Method TypeDescriptionUsed By
Distance-BasedCloser to turn = higher zoomGarmin, Google
ContextualRoad type & maneuver-basedMost systems
Predictive/AILearns behavior, adaptsTesla, newer systems
Manual + Auto ResetTemporary zoom overrideGarmin, some OEMs
Split-ScreenShows multiple zoomsBMW, Waze

I imagine an OEM has to make some experience choices and may also run into some interesting intellectual property boundaries depending upon their tech stack and source data. I don't know enough about Rivian's system to venture a guess on where they're at with this whole thing, but given the information shown above I feel fairly safe assuming this is a bigger conversation than "Navigation Preferences" in the Nav team's conference room.

I have always been annoyed by the auto zoom-in too. I frequently zoom out to get a better view of the overall route and wish it would just stay. A simple toggle to turn off the auto zoom-in would be nice.
