So, after a couple of months of not getting my tags, I pinged my guide, who wasn't any help, then emailed customer service who didn't reply until finally, I emailed RJ to ask for help. Within a couple of hours, my guide replied to the email I sent customer service ( thank you RJ ) saying she reached out to the title and registration team for an update. Today I got a call and email from a guy named Xander on that team saying that their vendor who was supposed to handle the registration screwed up and it never got sent to the DMV.....sigh...that was my fear...kicking myself I didn't escalate sooner

So, a couple of things. One, make sure you check that they actually send your registration to the DMV as soon as you can and hound them until they you get confirmation. Two, has anyone had their truck successfully registered in NJ and how long did that take? Lastly, has anyone in NJ been able to get a temp tag as a resident via Rivian? My current temp tags are from IL and expire at the end of the month. Rivian is checking into whether they can get me temp tags.

This thread reminded me to reach back out to my guide. It's been about 2 weeks since I last heard everything is on track. But I have no confirmation the MVC has even been engaged yet.

Did either of you have the option to register the vehicle yourself?

It wasn’t offered as an option but this thread amongst others caused me to preemptive ask to self register, which they approved.

I asked and was told it wasn't an option. I didn't push the issue either though.

So far, I just messaged my guide and asked.

Told them I heard about delays and asked if I can avoid that and self register, they said yes. My truck should be coming soon, they'll send me my paperwork with the truck indicating the sale.

Everything else is pretty standard stuff. I've done it 30+ times myself so it's no big deal for me.

Strange..how did you phrase it? What part of the purchase process are you?

Picked the truck up at the Brooklyn Service center on Wednesday. I asked if it was possible for me to self register right before signing. Maybe it was too late at that point as they had already prepared the paperwork for them to register the truck.

Yea definitely too late by then, there’s a different set of paperwork that is prepared and sent out.

I asked immediately after I confirmed my order.

Update: 4 days after taking delivery, I have my registration, title, and plates. I could have had it sooner if I available during the week, but I waited until the weekend.

Process is as follows:

With Rivian:

1) Make sure you request it when you confirm your vehicle. If you don't, the paperwork may not arrive on time and they will deny the request.

2) They ship the paperwork to your house, scheduled to arrive on the day of delivery. This will include MOST of the documents needed, but seemed to be missing a key one; Form OS/SS-14. Make sure you request this form be filled out and signed by your delivery specialist, it must be signed by a representative from Rivian and it was NOT included in my packet.

Link to form is here: https://www.state.nj.us/mvc/pdf/vehicles/luxtaxapp.pdf

IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THIS FORM, IT WILL CAUSE FRUSTRATION!

With NJ MVC:

1) Schedule your appointment at your local MVC for "Initial Title or Registration"
https://telegov.njportal.com/njmvc/AppointmentWizard/8

2) You will need to complete 3 forms the night before and bring them with you.
Note: Websites will say Form OS/SS-7 is needed, it is NOT. It is an old form an was replaced with Form OS/SS-UTA. This cost me about 10 minutes at the MVC.

3) Bring the following documents which you should already have.
  • Drivers License
  • Copy of Rivian Insurance Card or Declaration of Insurance
  • Check or Credit Card for Payment
It was easiest to fill these all out on PDF then bring them to the MVC. Copy and paste is a wonderful thing for the numerous places Rivian's address and your VIN is required. More importantly, you'll only need to wait in line once instead of collecting the forms, filling them out, then getting back in line.

If I had to do it again, I could be in and out of the DMV in about 10-15minutes. I went first thing in the morning. As it was, it took me roughly 20-25 minutes as I had to complete the OS/SS-UTA since I filled out the old form.

Hope this helps folks. The temp plates are good for 90 days, but I didn't want to deal with potentially trying to play telephone tag with expired plates.

NJ - Title, Plates and Registration arrived yesterday via FedEX. So about a month and a half from truck delivery. Seems like they have the process down now.
