Hello my dudes!

Today, we're officially announcing that the OpenSourceEV Parts Camp Drawer is officially available for immediate shipment!

Rivian R1T R1S NOW AVAILABLE - OpenSourceEV Camp Drawer - a Camp Speaker replacement IMG_1973

The OpenSourceEV Parts Camp Drawer is a direct, drop-in replacement for the OEM Camp Speaker that is provided by default with all Rivian R1T and R1S electric vehicles. It's modeled to resemble the speaker for a clean OEM-like look. It's sized to be just a bit shorter, so it doesn't sit quite as proud as the speaker does.

This product actually started as model right here on Rivian Forums by @kozak79! He made it to be printed on smaller printers and assembled using a series of dowel pins. This version, in contrast, is a two-piece affair that is secured together using 4 M5x10 Phillips bolts. It's additionally strengthened and lightened to make it slightly more durable and produceable.

Speaking of producible, this is by far the largest 3D print that we sell. It takes about 12 hours to print both parts of durable ASA material, and it's within 6MM of the size limit of what we can produce. This length of time, more than anything, dictates the pricing and availability of this item. As of this post, we have about two dozen available beyond what we sold through after world premiering it to our newsletter subscribers.

Installation is super easy. Remove the Camp Speak. Insert the Camp Drawer until it clicks into place. Most reasonable sized handguns fit inside (we strongly advise you remove them on exit), and it does fasten closed, but this does not lock to the vehicle like the Camp Speaker does. Future versions may do this, but there is no current plan or timetable for that to be an option.

Pricing on this is $99.95, and that includes free US domestic shipping, or $9.95 discounted shipping to Canda.
You can order them here: https://opensourceev.com/products/camp-drawer

You can read more about the development of the product on the initial thread here: https://www.rivianforums.com/forum/threads/my-3d-printed-oem-looking-camp-speaker-drawer.21533/

The open-source 3D model for our version of this item is available on our Printables.com page. (you can search for "Rivian" or "Camp Speaker" to find it)

Thanks again to @kozak79 for making the initial version of it!

can you expand on this statement: "it does fasten closed, but this does not lock to the vehicle like the Camp Speaker does"?

Sure thing! There is a latch at the back of the hole where the Camp Speaker is installed. When you insert it, the latch closes and retains the speaker. When you yank on it, you can remove the speaker with a decent amount of force.

When the speaker charges, the vehicle knows, and allows you to software lock the latch via a toggle on the screen. That toggle removes the ability to open the latch. It looks like this:

As our drawer doesn't charge, the vehicle doesn't sense there is an object installed and doesn't allow you to toggle the latch lock. This means that while our drawer is securely held in place, it won't lock shut.

It's worth noting that it's VERY securely held in place. Loaded up, full-on braking situation is A-OK. This makes sense as the Camp Speaker is quite heavy.

Thanks! That addresses my concern about a heavy object forcing the drawer open during emergency braking.

If you had to guess, would future “lock ability” be able to be retrofitted to this version?

It will not.

I'm not sure at this point. If or when we get there, it will be a priority though.

I worked with a company that made a prototype and they added a PCB to the back of the 3D printed drawer with two copper contact points and when I inserted the drawer, the UI showed it as an official Rivian drawer accessory, and it could be securely locked/unlocked. Here's what that looked like: https://www.rivianforums.com/forum/threads/preview-of-accessory-dock-drawer.20606/

I threw away the prototype but if I remember correctly it was the two outside pins.

One thing I liked about theirs was it was one solid print and much finer, could barely tell it was a 3D print. BUT because of that they had to flip the pull handle (imagine the drawer handle being upside down), whereas your handle is much more erginomical.

Being able to lock it is a non-starter for me. Needs to have that ability to be functional for my purposes. I'm really surprised no business has mass produced this yet.
To mass produce it economically requires injection moulding, which requires precision machined metal moulds to be made. We’re talking setup cost well north of $50k. Market demand isn’t big enough to justify that kind of start up cost. Precisely why 3D printing, aka rapid prototyping, is all you see and being offered as final product.

That said MK Machining can do all sorts of high definition scans and printing; including metal.

Maybe I'm daft but is this meant to replace the speaker because it's better somehow? Or is it for those who lost the speaker and want a replacement?

Camp speaker turns on for no reason a lot and if you do not remove from phones Bluetooth it will connect to your phone when vehicle is in garage. And lack of storage is why drawer is nice. Rivian is supposed to offer storage drawer as well s00n.

This is a drawer replacement for folks who need it, don't use the speaker, or both. It's styled to resemble the speaker for a factory-like look.

I hear ya - for a solid amount of folks, this isn't it. That said, this should work well for many. I've been using my hand assembled version for months now and I really don't want to go back.

Regarding why these aren't mass produced, I suspect it's a combination of factors making the business case non-viable.

It starts with a need of a truck to reverse engineer - there isn't a spec for what is needed to trigger the lock. There is also some trepidation because that lock is completely software driven and could change at any time, at Rivian's whim, potentially breaking functionality of your product.

Speaking of whim, I sure as heck wouldn't want to compete against free 3D models at the low end, this at the medium end, and a potential Rivian version up higher, especially if I had to invest in all of the tooling for a proper injection molded version.
