First year is up and I'm due for an inspection. Anyone recommend a good place on Long Island to go to or will any shop just be fine? I know it's only $10 and probably a waste of time but just want to make sure there isn't something special I should look out for. Thanks!

You and me both. Mine is due in 2 months, and I need a tire rotation too.

The issue is they are required to take off the wheel to look at the brakes. Some shops will say you can see the brakes, and skip it (and I'd probably pull the aero covers off before going, to encourage that). But if they follow the rules, they will need pucks to do the inspection. (or you can pull off the 4 corner panels before showing up).

I suspect, given the difficulty lifting it and the obvious fact it's new, they'll just look at the brakes and say it's good, and if they do that any place is fine.

Yeah, NY inspections can be difficult, depending upon where you go to get them done. I lived my entire life in NY before moving to NJ a couple of years ago and I'll say for sure that NJ is so much easier with inspections. They have free state inspection stations that you pull in and wait while someone inspects the car. They don't look at any safety items at all (which seems kinda crazy to me), they just plug into the OBDII port to check emissions faults. Then they check that the catalytic converter is still in place and that's it, inspection over. No inspection of tires, brakes, wipers, horn, none of that stuff. So an EV in NJ doesn't even get an inspection at all because it obviously lacks any emissions equipment.

That said, I was a certified NYS inspector for a number of years when I lived in NY and very rarely would I or anyone else performing inspections follow the rules. The only time I'd ever pull a wheel on any car is if they had solid wheels (like steelies) that I couldn't see the brakes.

Anyplace that does NYS inspections should be able to do it - most places won't put it on a lift to pull a wheel for the brake inspection, but if they do, make sure they have appropriate equipment (pucks) for the Rivian lift points or you provide it for them to use.

There are three shops I use in my neighborhood that are used to dealing with EV's, but like I said - anyone on the Island should be able to do it. Just be aware of the lift situation and make sure they use proper equipment and procedure otherwise you're getting a plastic panel ripped underneath if they go forward with a wheel take-off.

As @Foobar has said, just make sure the inspection shop has the correct pucks to lift the vehicle, if they want to look at the brakes.

We have a simple video that anyone can show your shop of choice, how to get your Rivian prepared for removing a wheel, changing a tire, etc., using jack pucks.

I provide the attached document (printed) to my tire shop when I check in and give them the fob. I leave the pucks on the driver's seat so they can't be missed. My local shop appreciates the document because it's not always the same person doing the rotations as the last time and it saves them from having to look up the torque settings for the lug nuts.

It's good to just buy a set of pucks and keep them in your car - I really like the Jack Pucks Magnetic. I keep them in the Rivian at all times because you just never know what kind of tire place (or roadside assistance) you may need when traveling. While my local place may have a set of pucks for the Rivian, I can't count on everywhere having them.

The potential Woodbury service center can’t come soon enough. I had my Tesla inspection done at Mavis Discount Tire. They had jack pucks.

Was recently at Brooklyn and they won't do inspection stickers there. They said it needs to be done at a garage that does inspections.

This ?. I use my local shop for inspections and they don’t remove wheels.

State inspection centers are required to provide the service to all vehicles. This is why Rivian and Tesla service centers don’t do inspections - they don’t service anything but their own.

Thanks! Not surprised from a state which makes you plaster stickers all over your car/truck to drive in the HOV and requires a separate EZ pass transponder to get EV discounts on certain tolls. Bureaucartic geniuses...
