I had the 1up 2/3 bike rack on my R1S. I use a hitch extender with 2 in drop because the R1S hitch height is too high to toss an e-mtb on it easily.

The 1-up in 3 bike mode is very bulky to move and mount. Sold it and switched to the modular Quikrstuff since you can add/remove each rack, one at a time. Totally worth the money vs the physical toil.

Hi Boney,

Thanks for pointing that out.

For the tongue weight of this rack, even fully loaded at over 200 lbs, this extension should be fine (in my non-professional, non-legal opinion).

The tongue capacity of the Rivian is 800lbs and I have read that a short extension can reduce tongue capacity by 25%. Again, not a materials or mechanical engineer here. But even a slightly larger load would be less than half the reduced rating.

The setup has worked for me.

Happy to hear from a greater expert.

R.

So Just fyi, I did ask about using an extender but they said that it would void warranty. It also reduces the capacity to 50%, according to them.

Using an extender for me would work but it is another thing to install and uninstall. Even if I leave the extender as part of the rack, securing it would not be "tool free" as intended. I do remove the rack quite often even though I use it half of the week.

Use with caution.

Great write up @johnj2803

I use a straight extender on a Jeep Wrangler with rear mount spare tire... never knew extender with drop even existed! I admit, though - never with ebikes. Maybe someone with more knowledge than me could explain how that 2" square steel tubing would hold up... doesn't seem as if it should de-rate a bike rack capacity, but I guess they know?

I had 3 previous SUVs with the hitch tucked in and lower than the Rivian - so much so that the first tray would be a little below the bumper when folded up (the first two trays sort of sandwiched the bumper) -a two tray setup would still leave the plate visible - found that height pretty easy to load.

I'm going to pick up one of those extenders with some drop and see if I can replicate the previous setup I had.

Faster in what way?
The 1UP weighs more, so it's slower to get on and off, but more importantly, the arms take some time to move into place; they have a movement speed limit. Adjusting the height of the Kuat arms to pressure my tires is also faster; I have a large variety of bike sizes and I'd either have to move the 1UP tire pressure points around, or else remind myself of which bike goes on which one of my four 1UP tracks. The latter strategy doesn't work when you have more bikes than tracks; then you might be back to adjusting the pressure points depending on which bikes you end up taking on any given day.

These days I mostly haul bikes in my truck with the Rivian tailgate pad, and use the Kuat on the R1S only for overflow.

I am an avid cyclist (3-5x weekly rides). I have used saris bones and clamp, rockymounts all 2-4 bike set up. My main gripe about these is that the 4 bike set up is very heavy and its a work out by itself. Putting on the 4 bike rack is such a hassle that I sometimes forgo it. When we got the R1s the height of the hitch is higher than our other vehicles that its much more difficult.
johnj2803 great report. I have the base Mach2 with one add-on, so capacity for two bikes. I want to add more bikes to it, but before I drop the $1,300 ish coin on two more extensions I'm curious if you have calculated how much reduction in range/efficiency at highway speeds with 4 full size bikes on this rack.

With two full size mountain bikes I haven't noticed any range reduction. However, due to the way the add ons go up in height slightly (each additional bike is about 3" taller so the 4th bike should be 9" higher than the first) and the fact that the bikes are also further behind the car I believe bikes 3 and 4 are more likely to get into the wind stream and will begin to have a noticeable impact on range.

Thanks.

Unfortunately I have not gone on a long road trip with this one. I would think it would be minimal. IF there was some form of significant range drop (which I doubt), what will be an option? Another rack? Yes the extra racks cost about the same as another 4 bike rack, maybe that can be an option.

A couple of thoughts for people contemplating: I have the 1up 2 bike config with 2 single bike add ons.

We typically set it up for 3 bikes.

Have also added a rack attach swingarm to the whole setup - much, much easier with loading/unloading the dog!

After posting here I came to the conclusion that I cant think of another viable option that would be any better so ordered two more add-ons which will give me a total capacity of four bikes. I primarily carry one or two bikes, but a few times a year I need to carry four so this will be a welcome addition.

I think for our situation its the best option for now too.
