The Rivian R1 Actually Came From The R2, And More Design Secrets

https://insideevs.com/features/745064/rivian-r1-design-jeff-hammoud/

“Not a lot of people know this, but R1 actually came from a design of an R2,” Rivian chief design officer Jeff Hammoud said as we toured the various studios. Hammoud’s advance team was designing the R2, while a core group was working simultaneously on the R1S.

But the larger flagship wasn’t gelling. When an advance designer produced a 3D model for the R2, Hammoud showed it to company founder and CEO RJ Scaringe, who loved the concept. Hammoud had to go back to the designer with some good news—and bad news. “RJ loved it, but it's not going to be an R2,” he recalled. “Now it’s the R1.”

Even though there was nothing ground breaking in it, I enjoyed this article. Like many Rivian fans it's not often that I read something about Rivian that's genuinely interesting at this point but I thought some of the anecdotes in this were new and interesting.

Like that they call Wassym "Chief Reddit Officer"

Thanks for sharing the article.
Lots of fun tidbits in there!

The one I liked the most:
being able to self-drive to meet a mountain biker or kayaker at the terminus of a long ride

Rivian is obviously behind Tesla, Ford, etc w/ their autonomous driving capabilities. But it's specific goals like this that are going to push the company. I love that the goal matches their brand promise, it wasn't a simple "we want to achieve Level 3/4/5 autonomous driving".

lol - I'm not holding my breath. I understand the entire market is really years away.
I love my R1S regardless of it kicks its self out of driver assist way too frequently.

Just a comment that having a goal that is aligned with the brand identity with specific use cases in mind is excellent goal setting. Still a lot of hard data science to achieve any actionable results.

yeah, I'd love to be able to enjoy all of the views along even just a few major scenic highways like the Blue Ridge Parkway without having to pay attention to the road. That feature would have been incredible.

The idea of a self-driving (fully autonomous) adventure vehicle would have a LOT of appeal, but I still think we're further from self-driving outside of very limited areas than many would like to believe. Waymo can do it in highly-mapped areas and still has a lot of problems. Imagine doing a one-way trail somewhere remote and having your vehicle not actually pick you up like you expected because of some fringe issue you could have never foreseen!
