I just have my R1T and bicycles - and after almost a year my luck finally ran out and I had to leave my truck at the service center for its first slumber party. They gave me an R1T loaner while they fix mine so I cannot complain!
Oh no! What happened?

It gave me an error code when I plugged into a couple DCFCs (RAN/ EA) about a month ago so I called in and made an appointment to have them check it. I fast charged probably another 12 times without any error so i was half expecting they wouldn’t be able to replicate what I saw.

Turns out I need a new HV battery, which is not good but they are taking care of it. It’s literally the only issue I’ve had in the almost year I’ve been driving it so I cannot complain.

I only have an R1T, and a bicycle. No toddler or dog though I do really like scratching dog ears. Young children have cute little feet. We played this game of smelling their feet and saying P U! So I think the toddler and dog are fine. The toddler will still be fun after growing up. One of my no longer a toddler sons has an R1S. The R1S is cool. He sleeps in it (because it is way quieter than a tent) after a day of rock climbing.

Hey all, occurred to me that I could condense my 5th gen 4Runner and Tesla Model 3 Performance into one vehicle in the R1S. I wfh, wife stays home, 90% of our driving is within a 10 mile radius with odd road trips that will require charging 1-2x/year. I do love to wheel and camp, so planning on getting good use out of our incoming R1S to that end as well.

With a toddler and large dog in tow, im trying to get a feel for whether I’m absolutely stupid for rolling the dice on the R1S as our sole vehicle? Will be on a 3 year/12k lease and at this point 50/50 on buying it out at the end. I’d prefer not to but could add a second car if absolutely necessary.

My tesla bricked early on a 12v battery issue but has otherwise been trouble free, same obviously goes for the 4Runner. Am I in for it fam? Rivian service center is a 20 mile/40 minute drive from me.

Just trying to get an early feel for what to expect, recognizing the bias of posting on this forum aside I know there’s probably a silent majority that have had nothing but great experiences. Give it to me straight y’all.
R1T owner over a year + (20k mi), daily driver, camper, truck stuff, no issues whatsoever, maybe I got lucky. The best vehicle /truck I’ve ever had. Highly recommend ?

Full send!!! Just make sure you have your Tesla Level 3 DCFC adapter (OEM or A2Z) with you when you go on road trips.

Rivian will give you a loaner / uber credits if you need to leave it for service overnight.

The vehicle itself will work great.

Find out if you can actually be a one car family before pulling the trigger. Try to go a month using only one of your existing cars to see if it will work.

We tried this in my family. It 90% worked. We just found there was 1-2 times a month where we both needed a car. I wish it had worked, but there were enough occasional conflicts that we couldn’t go down to one car.

Wouldn't Uber / Lyft / rental be cheaper for the 1 - 2 times a month you needed 2 cars compared to regularly paying for insurance, gas, maintenance and possible car payments / registration fees.

Helpful info I was interested in hearing, was curious about the protocols on this.

That was my rationale as well. Fortunately have family v close by if we needed a vehicle if push absolutely came to shove. I guess the slight fear I was trying to express with this thread was whether I should be expecting to have our truck at the service center an exorbitantly greater amount than your average vehicle.

That was originally our hope. But those rare occurrences tended to be something work related where one of us needed to drive 50+ miles, and the other one needed to take the kids somewhere, which is difficult in the car-seat years. I had really hoped it would work, but the exceptions were just a little too complicated.

Life happened to get more complex since we tried it (cancer diagnosis, new job with a commute, more kids sports, etc), so it’s probably for the best that it didn’t work, as we’d have needed a second car soon enough anyways.

You will get the opportunity to opt in for the free Tesla NACS to CCS adapter from Rivian after you take delivery. The actual adapter could take another 3 - 6 months to actually arrive at your doorstep.

You can always buy an A2Z brand Tesla Level 3 NACS to CCS adapter everyone is currently using if they have trips planned for Memorial day / Summer and can't wait for their free one.

The cost for the A2Z adapter after the forum discount code is $177 shipped. I plan to use mine as a back-up once my official one arrives in the future.

I feel like the only thing that took a while to fix and get my vehicle back was for cosmetic items that required a visit to the body shop.

All other items I needed addressed were done in a timely manner and honestly the time didn't bother me thanks to a loaner vehicle.

We have a R1T and a Tahoe. My wife drives the Tahoe and we make our long trips with her SUV. We travel to Houston 2 1/2 hour away and to NE Louisiana across I 20 280 miles away. To Houston it’s no problem, 2 Shell chargers and many other EVGo and EA chargers. But you can’t travel on I 20 from Dallas to Atlanta. It’s a EV charger desert through La, Ms, Al and Ga. There are multiple Tesla chargers that would make our trip very easy once we get our Tesla converter. Can’t wait to take my R1T to Lake Bruin, our lake house in La. The people over there, including my 2 brothers have never seen a Rivian. Rivian is not sold in La, Ms or Al. I really want to be adventurous.

I agree; get home charger, top it up every night as we do, and you won't have charging issues for the about town driving you're doing.
I've had my R1S since November of 2023 and couldn't be happier. Love driving the car, whether short or long distances. Great ride. Ample room for your kids and the dog. And you're ideally set up to be a one-car family.
You're good to go, my friend. And your service center is about the same disance away as mine. They'll take good care of you.
