I was driving my step-dad's 2024 Rivian R1S and got into a little incident. I was waiting on a red light on a street that is sloped upward... similar to a driveway or maybe a little more sloped. I was looking down at my phone and next thing I know I hear sensor warnings and someone bumps into me from behind. But when I got out they said I rolled back on them! Is that even possible in this car? It's a 2024 R1S, dual motor. Pretty new but he drives a lot so there's close to 40k miles. My step dad is really mad, but I still think the other car rolled into me. I know this car has a lot of safety features but it is pretty heavy. I didn't have my foot on the brake but I thought it should hold even on a hill. I did some online searching and I did find stories about the car rolling back a little, but that was after a software update last year. I would think that would have been fixed by now. Any insight would really help. Both cars only had scuffs on them, nothing serious. But it's still a huge headache to deal with :/ My stepdad is really angry but I'm hoping to be able to help him if possible. First I need to know if this is even possible in a Rivian, other than basically putting the car in Neutral and letting it roll. But then I would think the car behind me would have had more damage. I did hit the brakes just as I heard the alerts. If my car was rolling, it's possible that's why the damage was minimal. But I'm still guessing it was the other car. I know there's a camera system but I don't think it's set up to record continuously. Would it log something like that automatically? My step dad doesn't know anything about technology so wouldn't know how to access any of that. It has been a few weeks and he has been driving it... hopefully if there is footage, it's saved somewhere. Any info would help, thanks!

I’ve never had my R1S roll back on me and I rarely if ever have my foot on the brake when stopped.

Does your stepdad have a hard drive connected to the gear guard cameras? You can pull footage from there if so.

It may have also automatically captured it in the gear guard incidents section - but seems to be hit or miss from other reports. Also can be disabled - you can look for captured incidents in the gear guard section - there’s a tab for captured incidents (top right I think).

I've never had mine roll backwards. Part of my driveway is 7% grade (that's fairly steep) and I have stopped in the middle with no roll backwards. I suppose it is possible it rolled backwards, but it seems unlikely. As a Rivian approaches a stop, it automatically applies the brakes and tells you that by displaying "HOLD". Was it raining with the possibility that the brakes were wet?

As the others have said - never heard of this, not even once. Definitely check the video footage if you can - it will reveal all.

And maybe consider not using the phone while behind the wheel? While low risk if you’re stopped, you’d know exactly what happened if you were paying attention.

Might be worth it to have Rivian test the hold function. If it has an issue you will want it fixed, and it could help prove the vehicle didn't roll backward if they find nothing wrong.

I'd try to find the Gear Guard footage, and have Rivian download the vehicle's error logs and check for error codes that might indicate an issue.

Were you in an on-road drive mode, or experimenting with the off-road modes?

Hoping the car recorded this for you! Unless the R1 is in an off road mode with hold disabled, or has some error state causing no hold, I've never experienced one rolling back.

The only time my truck has rolled backwards is because I was in Rock Crawl mode with auto hold turned off. THis is really the only user set situation where that should be possible.

It’s interesting that you brought this up. I have noticed on a few occasions my R1S Tri moves forward a few feet when I stop on a downhill slope. I actually have it on my list of things I want Rivian to review at my next check up.

Thanks for your reply, I don't know about gear guard but I'm going to look into that!

No rain, clear night. From what it's sounding like is it's very unlikely it did roll... I'm going to look into getting the gear guard footage

Hmmmm... that's interesting. This is in regular drive mode with hold? Have you noticed if it would roll backwards on a hill or just forward, and did you notice that after an update or just all of a sudden??
