Like I've said, banging things into the roof isn't expected normal use. Put an elbow into any of the metal panels on the vehicle the same way and you're going to damage those too. Feel free to call me an apologist, but I constantly have things on my roof and do not incidentally put sharp pressure on the glass at all.
There is common sense - which you are describing, and I am 100% in agreement with you - and then there is what the vehicle should be able to endure.

The R1 vehicles are designed to protect occupants in a rollover. Clearly, Rivian did not design the roof to crack with the pressure of a body part. Nobody is talking about jumping up and down on the roof or slamming a heavy metal object on it.

If Rivian intended for the roof to have 0lbs of weight bearing, they would have made that crystal clear in the operating instructions or somewhere that is an official document.

The fact that they haven't - and that upon closer inspection decided to replace the OP's glass - speaks volumes.

"I'm a lawyer" is why they are good willing this replacement. If the OP breaks another one they should be on their own.

We both know how useless those kinds of statements are. Zero chance this person stopped to think about if Rivian would have put this in the manual before they broke their roof.

They probably still would have done it even if they had read it. "It's not like I'm strapping something directly to the roof, it'll be fine" as their justification.

Me, if I break my roof? "Well shit I guess I shouldn't have done that" and then pay to have it replaced. Some people don't want to learn lessons at their own expense.

You might be right if I had told them I was a lawyer. Generally that doesn’t elicit anything but eye rolls anyhow—and can even cause them to stonewall. There is really no great advantage to playing the lawyer card. I just explained the facts of the situation, my hypothesis regarding the root cause of the failure, cited the language of the warranty, and explained why, when all that information is taken together, the repair should be covered under warranty. It’s not magic and doesn’t require a law degree.

There is zero chance Rivian designed the tolerance of their laminated glass roof to crack upon pressure from a human body part.

Zero.

This was a defect in workmanship. Either, the glass itself, or the way the glass was sitting on the frame because of misalignments.

Anything beyond that is simply absurd.

Rivian engineered the crossbar system. Why would they engineer the glass roof to support loads like someone standing on it?

Likely only meant to have resistance to things like hail, and constantly loading from snow. Not something with a pressure point like an elbow.

To be clear, in my case I said elbow (assuming incorrectly that I didn’t need to be more specific), but it was more an elbow to forearm sort of pressure, definitely not pointy. Certainly didn’t drop The People’s Elbow on it like some of you are suggesting. God forbid a squirrel jump onto it from any height—probably smaller surface area and more force, let alone migratory sparrows dropping coconuts from even higher heights.

In any event, clearly if you don’t plan to be a perfect person when loading anything onto the roof racks, best get a Tesla or something else if you’re of the mind that zero touching of the glass is a perfectly normal and acceptable standard for such a vehicle. I’m happy to push Rivian to be better than that and, apparently, overdeliver on such mediocre expectations.

A friend told me this morning the replacement glass roof for his wife's 1 yo Volvo finally came in after a 6 month wait. They've had the car at the dealership for over a week now and it's still not ready. The roof just cracked on it's own (no roof rack, Christmas lights, no one leaning on it, no car wash, etc..) sitting in their driveway, Volvo is covering it under warranty. I guess other manufacturers are having issues with their glass roofs too.

At this point I am super cautious about even getting my roof wet when washing my truck during the summer... it seems just the shock of the cold water splashing it might be enough to crack it. Same for the windshield, I only wash the truck on cloudy days now (which is the best time to wash it anyway). Thank you fuyao ?

Wait. Leaning anywhere on an R1 series, such as the hood, with our elbows will dent it?

Law degree not required, but what % of the population can formulate a rational argument like that, live and in person? They definitely made a few lawyer jokes as you left the building. Tiger can’t hide its stripes!

It was mostly over the phone, but point taken. Perhaps I give people more credit than they deserve, but that’s probably why several people on this feed seem content with (or resigned to) accepting everything a company tells them — and apparently vehicles that are about as durable as a soda can. Even the 1989 Dodge Omni I bought used in high school (sometime around 2004) for $50 and some skateboard parts (and incidentally sounded like a soda can when I tapped on it) didn’t dent when someone leaned up against it.

I was actually being serious. Can we really not rest our elbow on the dang thing without denting the hood or door panel? Or was that guy just being dramatic?
