One day, when it's my turn, I am debating between leasing and buying. The price isn't the issue but the capabilities.

I know Rivian has stated the R2 with Lidar will be capable of eyes-off, hands-off point to point driving. Have they stated or promised its ability beyond that?

I am pretty content with the size and look of the R2 so I don't plan to upgrade to R3X any time soon. But if there is ever going to be a time where the R2 becomes obsolete and incapable of L5 or even L4 capabilities then there's no point in buying over leasing if I want the full autonomy experience.

edit: obviously I know Rivian's promises aren't guaranteed cc Rivian Class Action Gen1 Suit

The only difference between L3 and L4/L5 driving is the level of human fallback required. The difference between L3 vs L4 capability is largely software and computer efficiency within said software. Rivian doesn’t know whether their R2 is capable of L4 because they don’t know the timeline to solve said software and compute issues.

Honestly doesn’t really matter anyway. The long pole for L4 in consumer vehicles isn’t going to be technical capability, it’s going to be insurance and regulatory issues.

Do you need Lidar to have L3 capability?

I have an estimated order date of September, and I am wondering if I should wait for Lidar. I am also thinking of leasing so I don't suffer for being behind on Lidar.

Also what am I missing by not having Lidar?
