Probably not until well after the initial deliveries.

Not for another few months, at least. My somewhat educated guess would be closer to March or later of next year as they start to hit showrooms.

I imagine driving an R2 is like driving a dual motor R1S but without the terrible suspension and clunking and light on its feet, hopefully.

RJ stated they are going to have an announcement next year to give details on the models, pricing and timing. Though it might not be formally mentioned, you can assume it'll be tied to the schedule.

Who knows? You can't miss it when it begins, especially if you signed up for updates at Rivian.com, unless you happen to be completely off the grid that month.

The things we do know:
  • All camouflaged prototype units you see now were built at pilot line at Irvine HQ
  • These are built to: trial and validate production line layout, each individual vehicle component and how they come together, authoring and validating contents of service manuals, testing and calibration of all vehicle systems and their associated software, data gathering for report to submit for federal certification.
  • No vehicles can be sold unless certified. And while they may not have submitted already, the gov shutdown likely caused a backlog of existing submissions from all other makes. And this is in addition to reduction in agency head count through previous cuts.
  • Production line is being installed at Normal. It's not producing cars yet.
  • RJ himself said they will build hundreds on the pilot line, then once Normal is up and running, early next year, they will build hundreds more "for internal use".
  • Just like R1, employees will get first batch out of Normal before actual customer deliveries begin, to iron out production kinks further.
  • R2, some form of it, will be at the LA Auto Show. 11/20~31. Realistically, probably the same show car that's already been shown for over a year.
There are many months before deliveries begin.

Some of the near-final production line builds from the Normal assembly plant should be delivered to the automotive reviewers for testing and evaluation. Even though they may be slightly biased toward Rivian, they should be a decent review of the vehicle fit and dynamics! Hopefully this is late in Q1 or early in Q2 2025.

And hopefully about the same time the vehicle configurations and costs should be made available so we can start making our go/no-go decisions, trim level choice, cost to purchase, and rough delivery timeline (launch, next wave, next year).

Recent earnings call, Rivian said there will be a launch event for media early next year, where trim, specs and pricing will be announced. T&E units will not be available before that. And there will be the expected media embargo. So unless attendees violate agreement (leak), nothing will be released to public until embargo is lifted.
