We took our aero covers off and did a roundtrip this weekend to our lake place. I took the notes below but I don’t have a comparison with Aeros on. I think the main difference in my efficiencies on the two trips was due to a slightly different route on my return and elevation gain on the return. I would say in mild conditions expect 80-85% of dash range when in Conserve Low and driving 70-75mph. Pretty similar to what we would experience in our Model S.

Conserve low 326mi dash range estimate
39deg, 5-9mph tailwind
70-75mph speed, climate 70deg no seat heaters, 50psi tires
Arrived with 97mi dash range, 204 total driven, 229 dash range used. 89% of dash range to real world.

Conserve low 319mi dash range estimate
52deg 3-4mph tail wind most of trip.
70-75mph speed, climate 69deg no seat heaters, 50psi tires
Arrived with 58mi dash range, 214 total driven, 261 dash range used. 82% of dash range to real world.

Yours will fluctuate for your scenario but hopefully my situations will give you a general idea.

21" w/ aero. Mixed driving - Avg 2.3m-2.7mi/Wh
21" w/o aero. Mixed driving - Avg 1.9mi-2.3mi/Wh
22" wheels. Mixed driving - Avg 2.0-2.5mi/Wh

The majority of my miles have been on the 22s at an average of 2.14mi/Wh and a projected range of 336 on conserve. The biggest surprise for me was that the 22" wheels & tires were noticeably MORE efficient than the 21" w/o aero.

If doing local the difference is minimal but if the mix of highway had a much larger impact than expected.

So without aero wheels....21s Range is similar to that of 20s....

I have noticed almost no change in efficiency. I usually match or beat the expected arrival estimate from the nav (when not sub-zero or with 30-50 mph headwinds).

I wouldn’t jump to that conclusion. I haven’t had a set of 20s to test. Those results could be different based on my driving habits.

My range of 21’s with aeros matches the above range of workout aero… so ymmv… literally! Lol

On a related note, has anyone figured out a good way to keep the aero covers from scratching up the wheels? I had them for 800 odd miles and they are badly scratched. I expect the covers to reach bare metal in a few thousand miles.

I removed the covers for now, but would like to add them for long trips, especially if I have to depend on a lone Electrify America station without covers.

Now u got me thinking i should check mine to see how bad the scratches are ?

I took the Aeros off my 21’s because they were scratching the wheels. The effectiveness of them is hard to quantify. I’m OK with my efficiency without them …. But with unscathed wheels.

Noticed the aero cover wear beginning when my truck was first delivered.
Removed covers with plan to apply teflon rub tape to wheels at wear points. It will be a tedious job to cut & apply, so keep putting it off.
Protection has to be applied to wheel, not the cover.

That’s wild. I didn’t see nearly the delta with the aero covers off vs. on.

FYI I consistently see 2.5 in mixed driving with them off, up to 3.0 in Conserve at 65mph in the flats.

My best guess is when the covers are on, I’m doing large miles and usually on conserve. So while the driving is mixed I’m much easier on the throttle.

When the covers are off, I’m typically in a - charge at home scenario and a bit more careless with speed and acceleration.

That said, the biggest surprise is the 22 comparison. I’ve done exactly one big conserve trip on those, the rest would’ve been just as careless as the 21s w/o aero.

Aha - that makes a lot of sense. I’m sitting here at my desk wondering how in the world you saw a 20% hit from removing the aero covers when the wheels are still inside the arches, etc. That’s cool about the 22’s, too.
