If Rivian makes a vehicle with a front gear tunnel, can we call it the fear tunnel instead of frear tunnel? Frear is just too confusing.

I see the 12v battery under the cowl. And who said BEV’s were simpler than an ICE vehicle?

I think it has been reported that the 12v battery is actually 2 6v batteries.

Might not be too attractive from the front and likely problematic aerodynamics, but imagine a design with a front cargo rack which would be called a “frack.”

I believe you are correct after zooming in on the photo. Interesting…

Laser shifters. With 835hp its hard for me to maintain proper speed.
Thanks.. very helpful. I will also be installing AL Priority Shifters (assume that is what you are doing). Once everything was removed per your info above, was there any easy to access points to pass the wires through the firewall into the cabin? Just did this on my new 22 Tesla Model S and it was a huge PITA.

The tow guide explicitly refers to them as two 12V batteries, I think they are just small batteries.

My Tesla has a single, similarly small 12V battery. It's proven to be underpowered for the vehicle, so they swapped it with a fancier battery that fit in the same spot (some nano-tech carbon battery). I'm guessing Rivian figured it was cheaper to have 2 small 12V batteries than make room for a larger one or have an expensive battery.

Thanks for the information.

I think a small 12v lithium battery would fit perfectly under the cowl and help eliminate some wiring. I know the refreshed Model S now uses one. It's probably the higher cost that prevents Rivian from installing one at the factory.

Lithium batteries also require more care and feeding than a lead acid/AGM one…in addition to being more expensive

This. I think they are two small 12V in parallel. I doubt they would source 2 6V in series for a variety of reasons.

I'd be curious to see under the covers and get actual specs on the batteries. At least a voltmeter could quickly/easily confirm.

Maybe they're 6V batteries.
Maybe they're 12V "powersports" batteries.

It'd be kind of nice if they're powersports batteries, so at least replacements are likely to be found in stock, locally.

To my eyes, that's a helluva lot simpler than an emissions-compliant engine built in the last 25 years … : )
