After a hard reset (soft reset did nothing earlier) and sitting on the driveway for an hour, it seems to be working again - but I’m spooked; just when I thought this was all over and was starting to plan a road trip/picking out a roof top tent.
This thread (yours) has been going on since February.6th, three months titled Why am I doing this to myself - long time Rivian customer close to giving up

It's way past time brother. No vehicle is with this and it doesn't make either Rivian or you a bad person, it's just time to end it.

I almost made it 500 miles without a service center appointment this time! That’s over 5x better than it’s been to date at least. Looks like something is up with the rear motors or inverter - they are not lighting up at all - so it’s like a gen1 in conserve now, and it seems all adas is disabled.

Dude, what I’d give to get a gen1 back - just hit 14k miles on our Gen1 R1S with only a single mobile service so far (well two if you count the torque check they did last week).
I hate to see you continue to have issues with your "new" Rivian. I'll say it again but ironically, your thread is what gave me the greatest pause in buying a Rivian but after reading so many success stories I took the plunge and have had a far from ideal experience. I had refreshed hope when I thought you finally got your replacement all ironed out that my own car would come back perfectly from service when they finish but now this news

My 2 cents having been in a Gen 1 Quad R1S for the passed several weeks is it sure feels very different than what little I recall of my Gen 2 Dual. Oddly enough, I've now driven the loaner more than my own vehicle. That said, the camera on the Gen 2 over Gen 1 is night and day between clarity and especially framerate. For whatever reason the low framerate on the Gen 1 loaner gives me a headache. Also, this Gen 1 has some serious vampire drain. For instance, first drive home at 20miles and being parked in the garage for a few days battery SOC went from about 88% down to 66%. Lastly, I don't know what previous drivers did but at 8k miles the tires are nearly bald and I can't believe Rivian was OK sending a customer off in a vehicle with tires like this. High regen braking has locked the brakes several times. I will say there are no creaks and rattles like in my brand new, off the lot, Gen 2. Besides that, something just feels off driving the Gen 1 and maybe that's because I've stuck to All Purpose mode (same mode I used in my Gen 2). Now that I've typed all of that maybe there is something wrong with my Gen 1 loaner.

Not again. You must have angered the Rivian gods or something to get dumped on this badly. My Gen 2 has 10K on it, trouble-free and counting.
They are driving down from Normal tomorrow with a loaner, and then taking my truck up to the mothership: they think there's something going on with the rear wheel speed sensors. They also want to review the telemetry they collected over the last month for efficiency (~1.6kWh/mile - in a mixture of AP and conserve); they did not want to provide a summary over the phone, without looking at the truck 1st.

It's on them to fix or replace it: the team at the Normal SC are being great - and I get their hands are tied beyond their control.

That sucks, but at least they are taking it more seriously with having the factory techs working on it now. If that had been done from the beginning you’d be good by now most likely. I’m sure that makes this (slightly) easier to swallow.

I have faith in the mothership!
The mothership is great! They actually created new a new ticket for wind noise based on what they observed during the drive to normal - I was prepared to live with it as a minor inconvenience based on everything else.

Its sad that wind noise is still an issue on Gen 2 trucks. Glad they will look into it.

Received an update: the front-facing radar is intermittently losing connection, which they can see from the telemetry.

They haven’t yet determined whether it’s a module failure or a wiring issue and will resume diagnostics next week.

Unfortunately, the technician who called was unaware of the trucks repair history and was surprised that the AXM2 and camera modules had already been replaced.

Copilot summary:

1. Front Radar / ADAS Fault
  • Reproduction Confirmed: On May 27, Rivian technicians drove the vehicle under controlled conditions and successfully recreated the radar malfunction. This confirmed that Adaptive Cruise Control not only failed but also displayed only a single target ahead on the screen following radar failure.
  • Diagnostic Findings:
    • Radar firmware parameters were reset and extensive test drives conducted. However the issue persists.
    • The unit continues to log a persistent DTC: “firmware internal failure.”
  • Next Action: Engage radar supplier and Rivian engineering in a deep-dive root-cause analysis to isolate and correct the internal firmware defect.
2. Drive-Mode “Conserve Only” Event
  • Symptom: The vehicle unexpectedly locked into Conserve mode, preventing selection of Sport or All-Purpose modes.
  • Current Explanation: Rivian’s diagnostic specialist reports that the rear-drive unit’s safety “disconnect” feature likely triggered upon detecting an anomalous parameter, forcing Conserve mode.
  • Pete’s Observation: At the time of the event, the vehicle was already in Conserve mode and cruising at a steady ~40 mph on a smooth road—no aggressive inputs or off-road conditions.
  • Status: No definitive software bug or hardware fault has been identified; Rivian will monitor for recurrence and gather data if the issue reappears.

I'd say a key takeaway from this is likely that others could have the same issues, especially the radar one. Like usual, just when you figure out the issues with the current gen of vehicles, the next one comes along with all kinds of new ones. About the time they finally get sorted, the following gen will come out. Rinse and repeat.

@portdirect - I hope they get this sorted for you soon. Has to be really frustrating with a brand new truck.

Sounds like they bit the bullet - new cable harness being installed (Need to wait for it to come in - luckily though it needs to be ordered the transit time should be short! :) ) Makes sense with all the electrical system failures.

In 13 days the truck will be 6 months old, and not managed to make it a month on the driveway without needing to go to the SC, or 500 miles without a component failing. 1861 miles on the odometer now - I've got considerably more milage on loaners (which are all awesome) than the actual truck: It hurts.

They'll probably be able to identify the defect in the harness after removal. Either an improperly inserted pin somewhere or a pinch would be my guess.
