So I’m trying to come up with the best way to attach some custom 80/20 extruded aluminum accessories. The accessory ports for the cargo crossbars provide some major advantages over bed rails if I can find a good solution. Right now, it appears the only adapters I can find are made by Weistec:

https://www.weistec.com/accessory_port_adapter_for_rivian.html

Although I can respect that R&D costs need to be recouped, $100 per adapter is just too much for me (similar adapters for Molle panels, for example, are about $5 each).

I’ve thought about using U bolt hardware because I can’t find any cheaper adapters or think of a better option.

Is anyone aware of other adapters or maybe another mounting option that I’m not thinking of? Thanks in advance!

The Xtrusion Overland bed rack mounts a side rail to those attachment points that should be compatible with 15-series 80/20. They don't list it as a standalone product, but might be worth reaching out and seeing if they would sell it to you.

Has anyone successfully used U-Bolts to attach items to the Rivian accessory ports? I'm considering building a DIY roof rack for my R1S using extruded aluminum, and am hesitant to pay $100 each for the 6 Weistec adapters that I would need.

I was thinking the same thing...seems pretty straightforward but i havent tried yet. i was thinking a J-Hook with a thumbscrew on the top-side.

did you manage to get something to work?

I have seen (I think somewhere here in rivianforums) pictures of functional DIY J-hooks. I believe he made them by cutting off part of a U-bolt.

Can you explain the major advantages or what you are trying to achieve over standard bed rails?

@JCBAZ I think the goal is flexibility for lots of rack options.

I've been dreaming of a wire cable slipped under and then pulled in tension to lock whatever is needed down to the port. Haven't heard of anyone else thinking about that and I don't know if it is because it is wildly unsafe or plausible.

I'd be idly curious to see a video how these install? Do the factory inserts remove? Or do you drill through them?

I believe the lower pair slide in from each side of the yellow bit, then the top cover sandwiches around and only bolts to itself with no modifications to the stock anchor system needed. Same bolts hold whatever you want to mount down too. Smart (but expensive) solution.

I’ve used u-bolts and locknuts for a diy accessory over the bed. The connection was very solid.

The DCE mounts are very nice, but they are also super expensive. I wish they could lower the price point to about $50 per mount.

If you go the U-bolt or J-bolt route, I would just make sure they are sufficiently thick to minimize any lateral shifting that might occur.
